Following Sea to Stand in Manitoba

Thoroughbred Daily News - Mon, 2023-11-20 15:07

Following Sea (Runhappy–Quick Flip, by Speightstown), the recently retired winner of the 2021 GII Vosburgh S., will begin his stud career next season at Rivard Stables in Eli, Manitoba. The 5-year-old was purchased from his breeder, Spendthrift Farm, by longtime Manitoba horseman Gary Naherniak to stand in Western Canada.

Racing in the Spendthrift colors for trainer Todd Pletcher, Following Sea was second in the 2021 GI Haskell S. and GI Cigar Mile and was third in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint and GI H. Allen Jerken Memorial S., in addition to his Vosburgh victory. On the board in all nine career starts, he won three times and earned $855,620.

“Following Sea is great looking and an outstanding mover,” Pletcher said. “He had tons of speed.”

The deal to send Following Sea to Manitoba was brokered by Derek MacKenzie and Matt Bowling of Vinery Sales.

“Following Sea was an explosive racehorse, specializing on dirt at six to eight furlongs. His 3-year-old campaign was very impressive as he shipped back and forth across the U.S. a couple of times and ran well at numerous major tracks, winning the GII Vosburgh and placing in multiple Grade I's. He was tough on the track and is an awesome physical specimen, being that he is both big and pretty. I remember inspecting the Spendthrift yearlings in the spring of 2019 and we at Vinery Sales ranked him #1 as the best yearling physically we had seen that year. This is an incredible stallion prospect to stand in Manitoba, and I would expect mares to, not only travel within Manitoba to him, but for breeders to send mares from the other Western provinces and most likely some from Ontario and the U.S. as well.”

Following Sea's stud fee will be announced in the near future.

Roy H Joins Kentucky Horse Park’s Hall of Champions

Thoroughbred Daily News - Mon, 2023-11-20 11:19

Two-time champion sprinter Roy H (More Than Ready) will take up residence in the Hall of Champions at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, becoming the first to join the Hall since the passing of Funny Cide, Point Given and Go For Gin.

Raced by Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen, Roy H first gained national prominence in 2017, capping a three-race winning streak with a 2 1/2-length victory in Belmont's GII True North S. in his first start outside of California. He added wins in the GI Santa Anita Sprint Championship and defeated Imperial Hint (Imperialism) and Mind Your Biscuits (Posse) in that year's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint to secure his first Eclipse Award.

His 2018 campaign was a virtual carbon copy of the previous year's, as he won the Sprint Championship and the Sprint, this time defeating a future winner in the form of Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect). He was also third in that year's G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen and retired with a record of 23-10-5-2 and earnings in excess of $3.1 milion.

He became a stable pony for trainer Peter Miller, who became his owner.

“Roy H was a once-in-a-lifetime horse,” said Miller. “He was the best sprinter of his generation, winning back-to-back Breeders' Cup Sprints and Eclipse Awards. He was a joy to train and be around–all class, all the time. I look forward to visiting him at the Kentucky Horse Park.”

Champion Sprinter Work All Week Passes Away

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2023-11-18 18:07

Work All Week (City Zip), upset winner of the 2014 GI Breeders' Cup Sprint and that year's champion sprinter, died at Old Friends in Georgetown, Kentucky, Monday, Nov. 13. According to Old Friends equine veterinarian Dr. Bryan Waldridge, the 14-year-old suffered a fatal paddock accident. A full necropsy is pending.

Bred in Illinois by Richard and Karen Papiese's Midwest Thoroughbreds, the likeable chestnut was trained throughout his career by the late Roger Brueggemann. During the summer of 2013, Work All Week embarked on an eight-race winning streak that included open-company stakes victories in the Hot Springs S. at Oaklawn and in the Iowa Sprint H. at Prairie Meadows. He was upset in an Illinois-bred stakes in the summer of 2014, but bounced back to validate favoritism in the GIII Phoenix S. at Keeneland ahead of a half-length victory in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita, joining Buck's Boy as the only Breeders' Cup winners bred in the Land of Lincoln. As a 6-year-old in 2015, Work All Week added the Byrd Memorial S. at Mountaineer Park and was third to Runhappy (Super Saver) in defense of his title in the Phoenix.

Over the next five years, Work All Week became a stable pony before the Papieses donated him to Old Friends for his retirement.

“Even though I bet on second place finisher, Secret Circle, in the 2014 Breeders' Cup Sprint, I fell in love with Work All Week and his owners, Richard and Karen Papiese, who supported him and his pal, The Pizza Man, ever since they arrived at Old Friends,” said Old Friends President and Founder Michael Blowen.

‘Rising Star’ Nysos Headlines Bob Hope

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2023-11-18 14:33

Nysos (Nyquist), a jaw-dropping 10 1/2-length debut winner at Santa Anita Oct. 21 and a no-brainer 'TDN Rising Star,' takes on four rivals in Sunday's GIII Bob Hope S. at Del Mar.

Purchased by Baoma Corp for $550,000 at the OBS April Sale, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert takes the blinkers off for this seven-furlong test. He is the 4-5 morning-line favorite.

Baffert will also saddle Wine Me Up (Vino Rosso), who followed a second-place finish in the GI American Pharoah S. Oct. 7 with a well-beaten eighth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile; and Mission Beach (Curlin), who makes his first start since tiring to fifth at second asking in the GI Hopeful S. at Saratoga Sept. 4.

The field is rounded out by a pair of last-out maiden winners. Stronghold (Ghostzapper) ships in from Kentucky after graduating for Phil D'Amato at Churchill Downs Oct. 1 and the rail-drawn Tejon Pass (Justify) looks for his second straight for Peter Miller following a Sept. 30 maiden win at Santa Anita.

Quality Road’s Integration King of the Hill Prince

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2023-11-18 14:10

Heavily favored to run his unbeaten streak to three, West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing's Integration (Quality Road) made his off price of 4-5 look like an early Christmas gift, as he parlayed a perfect trip into a dominating victory in Saturday's $250,000 GII Hill Prince S. at Aqueduct.

Away without incident from the three hole, the $700,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate fell into the ideal spot from third, racing in clear air, as 65-1 Laurel Valley (Laoban) set a solid pace in advance of a headstrong Equitize (GB) (Kingman {GB}), the 5-1 second pick making his first start since breaking his maiden in impressive fashion at Tampa in mid-March. Settled well off that leading duo down the backstretch, Integration began to take closer order and edged out into the three path for a clean shot at the leaders around the turn. Three wide on the swing for home, the bay drifted out several paths into the middle of the course, but kicked on decisively to put the Hill Prince well and truly out of reach. The well-backed I'm Very Busy (Cloud Computing) made a middle move passing the half-mile to race inside of thee eventual winner, but was no match late and finished runner-up ahead of Toofareastiswest (Street Sense) in third. According to DRF Formulator, Integration sprinted his final eighth of a mile in a wicked :10.85.

A towering 6 1/2-length debut winner on the Arlington Million undercard at Colonial Aug. 12, Intergration upset the Sept. 9 GIII Virginia Derby from farther off the pace as a 13-2 chance when last seen.

“I always liked this horse. He just had little things and we had to stop–nothing major,” said winning trainer Shug McGaughey. “He had a little splint and we had to back off of him. I made one good move–which I don't make that many times [laughs]–when I sent him down to Fair Hill. I think he really liked that–the paddock, training, breezing on the Tapeta. I think that was a good move. He went before Saratoga.”

The Hall of Fame conditioner said the GI Pegasus World Cup Turf in early January is a potential objective.

Added victorious jockey Kendrick Carmouche: “Those horses in front of me were going pretty well. I was sitting on the rail at the beginning, and I angled him out to the three path where they couldn't keep me in there. This horse did everything on his own. This is a monster.

He continued, “I appreciate Shug [McGaughey], West Point, and Bill Farish [of Woodford Thoroughbreds], everybody. They could have gone with anyone in the jock's room and they kept me on. That means a lot.”

Pedigree Notes:

Integration was bred by Larkin Armstrong, who purchased the colt's dam for $80,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September sale, having previously acquired second dam Mesa Fresca for $15,000 at the 2011 Keeneland November sale. Trained for Armstrong by Bill Mott, Harmonize became one of the leading turf fillies of her generation in 2016, taking out the GI Del Mar Oaks before finishing runner-up behind Time and Motion (Tapit) in that year's GI QE II Challenge Cup at Keeneland.

Integration is one of two winners from two to race from the mare, whose current 2-year-old Catch a Wave (Curlin)–a $400,000 Keeneland September graduate–is in training at Fair Hill, where he worked three-eighths of a mile in :38.40 earlier Saturday. Behind that is the yearling filly Castanet (Nyquist), a weanling colt by Gun Runner and Harmonize is expecting a foal by Flightline next season.

Given all his success with his dirt runners, it might be easy to overlook the fact that Quality Road has been a sire of high-class turf horses. Four of his 14 elite-level scorers have achieved that designation on the turf: Bleecker Street, Hootenanny–whose dam was by Hennessy–Illuminant and Spring Quality. The likes of Astronaut, Cairo, Cowboy Culture and Lonely are among his additional graded/group winners on the grass.

Ramos, Garcia, Speiss/Klopp Secure Horseshoe Indianapolis Honors

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2023-11-18 11:39

Jockey Joe Ramos, trainer Genaro Garcia and the team of Roger Speiss's Speiss Racing and trainer and co-owner Randy Kloop were atop the standings in their individual categories when the 2023 racing season concluded at Horseshoe Indianapolis Friday, Nov. 17.

In the closest of the contests, Ramos scored his second consecutive leading jockey title by one win (109-108) over Fernando de la Cruz in a battle that came down to the final race of the season. The Puerto Rico native bettered the 106 victories he posted in 2022.

“There are a lot of people that work hard for me,” Ramos said. “I worked hard for this, and I dreamed of this, but it wouldn't be possible without all the people around me. My agent, Bones [Kerry Wirth], deserves the credit. He is the one that gets my business going and when we struggle, he takes me out of that and gets me back going.”

Garcia earned his first title as leading trainer in 2017 and proved best for a fifth time, winning 73 races during the 123-day meet with earnings of better than $1.7 million. Garcia has now trained 495 winners in his career.

“I'm always surprised with our 2-year-olds,” said Garcia. “That's what excites me every year. They give you hope each year and it's real exciting to see them. And you are always looking for the next 2-year-old. That's exciting. We start with our babies in September and work with them for 60 days, then we give them a break and start back with them.”

The Speiss/Klopp partnership was leading owner for the third straight season, with 33 wins from 168 runners and earnings of more than $834,000.

“Randy and his crew did a great job again,” said Spiess. “Our partnership goes well beyond 20 years and the entire barn works hard. A special thanks goes out to everyone in the barn and all the jockeys. It was another great year.”

The 2024 meeting at Horseshoe Indianapolis kicks off Monday, Apr. 8 with a special program to coincide with the total solar eclipse in the area that afternoon. The season ends Nov. 14.
