What I bring as an advisor in the thoroughbred racing industry is hands on experience working with thoroughbreds for several Hall of Fame Trainers, excellent horsemen, training champion horses. I was an exercise rider for D Wayne Lukas during the years of Capote, Sacahuista, On The Line, Life At The Top and many more quality horses that we broke at the Rancho Santa Fe Farm built by Gene Klien. I rode for Williard Proctor, Neil Drysdale, Darrell Vienna, and many other trainers. My beginnings in the industry were with trainers like Bruce Headley, who taught me to gallop horses and about buying horses at auction. I was an assistant and exercise rider for Lewis Cenicola, who was the exercise rider for John Henry and Ron McNally’s right hand man – training Louie’s second string of horses – young horses first coming to the race track, older horses on layup coming back into training. I handled Two Year Old In Training Sales and purchased yearlings for myself and partners and sold as Wavecrest Thoroughbreds. I was the trainer and consignor for my purchases. Out of 12 horses bought over a period of 6 years, on a beer budget for Wavecrest Thoroughbreds, I bought and sold the following horses:
My selections produced:
• Grade I winner ‘Cash Included’ – winner of the Grade I Oak Leaf at Santa Anita / Breeders Cup starter. Earnings over $320,000. (purchase price $25,000 sold for $70,000) After her maiden win she sold privately for $300,000, and as a G1 winner she sold for $600,000 to Japanese connections.
• Grade II placed ‘Capitano’ – second in the Grade II Best Pal and Norfolk, multiple stakes winner and earner of $576,894. Breeders Cup starter. Sire. (purchase price $53,000, sold privately)
• Raijin O – winner of over $423,663 in Japan. (purchase price $33,000 sold for $190,000)
• Borasca – winner of $92,440 at Santa Anita. (purchase price $7,500 sold for $40,000 to Bruce Headley).
• Sweet Awakening – Dam of 2 time Canadian champion Are You Kidding Me, Graded Stakes winners Core Values and Kehoe Beach with total progeny earnings of $2,400,000
• Life Directions, Brown Eyes, Bear Kitty, Mad for Candy – all Winners.
Developing my eye for good horses by working with them, I am a good judge of horses at the sales and an excellent paddock profiler of horses racing. From 2019 - 2024 I worked for John Shirreffs at Del Mar race meets, working with horses Honor AP, Express Train, Baeza, Midcourt, Beyond Brilliant, Justique, Skinner and many other good quality horses. My hands on therapy contributed to winning performances with therapy on Shirreffs horses with lasers, massage and stretching.
