Santa Anita Handles Over $50M On Opening Weekend

Mon, 2024-12-30 10:11

The momentum built by the opening-day, six graded-stakes program at Santa Anita carried on into the weekend, as bettors pushed all-sources handle to over $50.4 million over the course of the 39 races between Thursday, Dec. 26 and Sunday, Dec. 29.

Aided by strong support from owners and trainers that led to an increase in field size from 2023, the stretch was led by the $21.4-million turnover on Thursday's program, topped by the GI Malibu Stakes, won by Raging Torrent (Maximus Mischief) and the GI La Brea Stakes, taken out by Kopion (Omaha Beach). That amount was the third-highest recorded on opening day in the history of the track and was the fourth time in the last seven years exceeding $20 million. Total attendance for the four days was better than 62,000, with over 41,000 heading through the turnstiles on opening day.

Santa Anita hosts a special New Year's Day program this Wednesday, with nine live races, and the four-day week continues Friday through Sunday.

Dylan Davis, Chad Brown Lead NYRA Circuit Standings For 2024

Sun, 2024-12-29 18:13

Jockey Dylan Davis earned 209 wins across six race meets in 2024 to pace all riders and secure top honors as the leading rider at the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA). This is Davis's second year-end NYRA title, adding to a 2022 campaign which saw him win 186 races.

This year, Davis, who is represented by agent Mike Migliore, scored a pair of meet titles at the Aqueduct winter [54] and Belmont at the Big A fall [44] meets.

“It means a lot,” said Davis. “Me and Mike put in a lot of work, day in and day out and year in and year out, on the NYRA circuit. We have a lot of support from all the horsemen and owners to ride their amazing horses. I feel I've been improving as a rider and getting better every year. It's great to have that recognition and to have this accomplishment to be the NYRA year-end leading jock. I know it's my second one, but it feels really good.”

Among Davis's 23 stakes wins were 10 graded events, led by his first Grade I win with Carson's Run (Cupid) in the Saratoga Derby Invitational at Saratoga Race Course.

“Everything came together at Saratoga. I feel I've always been riding well, but we really capitalized on the opportunity with good riding and the horses being ready. Saratoga is the place where you want to really shine and to finish third at the premier meet was a big accomplishment and I think it opened up the eyes of a lot of owners and trainers that my riding ability has stepped up. It really continued through the fall and the quality of horses has been improving and I'm really thankful for that.”

Davis finished the year with a NYRA record of 1,091-209-165-140 and earnings of $15,349,606, good for a win rate of 19.16 percent and in-the-money rate of 47.11 percent.

Manny Franco claimed second in the year-end standings with 196 wins while Kendrick Carmouche finished third with 152 wins.

Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown secured his ninth year-end training title with 146 wins. Brown captured three meet titles this year at Belmont at the Big A spring [32 wins], Saratoga [45 wins] and a 13th consecutive Belmont at the Big A fall [31 wins] during a season which saw him win multiple Grade I races with runners such as Chancer McPatrick (McKinzie), Carl Spackler (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), Domestic Product (Practical Joke), Raging Sea (Curlin), Ways and Means (Practical Joke), Whitebeam (GB) (Caravaggio), Randomized (Nyquist) and Chili Flag (Fr) (Cityscape {GB}).

Brown posted a record of 574-146-96-77 with $15,881,246 in purse earnings for a win rate of 25.44 percent and in-the-money percentage of 55.57. Linda Rice finished second with 121 wins with Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher finishing third with 67 wins.

Chad Brown | Sarah Andrew

The year's leading owner, Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables, secured its sixth consecutive year-end title with 63 victories. Klaravich Stables posted an overall record of 224-63-37-26 with total purses of $5,957,965.  Michael Dubb finished second with 38 wins while Linda Rice finished third with 34 wins.

For the Aqueduct fall meet, Manny Franco came out on top as the leading rider, scoring 34 wins that included six stakes wins.

“I feel blessed to have these opportunities for all the trainers, all of the owners, here in New York, all year round,” said Franco. “My agent, John Panagot, has been doing a terrific job. I've been winning a lot of races here, so winning the title is just amazing. I feel great about that.”

Franco, who was also NYRA's year-end leading rider in 2018-19 and 2023, posted a meet record of 143-34-24-16 with earnings of $2,327,063, good for a win rate of 23.78 percent and in-the-money percentage of 51.75.

Dylan Davis finished second with 32 wins with Jose Lezcano finishing third with 21 wins.

Trainer Linda Rice secured her third consecutive Aqueduct fall meet training title with 22 wins, her third training title this year after taking the Aqueduct winter [23 wins] and Aqueduct spring [18 wins] meets.

“I'm happy to have won this title three years in a row, that's good,” said Rice. “Hopefully we can keep moving forward and have a good winter meet. We have about 80 horses and it's a lot of work and we always have horses coming in and out – horses always need time, but it's a good number to work with.”

Rice completed the meet with a record of 103-22-15-22 and earnings of $1,341,177, good for a win rate of 21.36 percent and in-the-money rate of 57.28 percent. Rick Dutrow, Jr. finished second with 16 wins and Brad Cox finished third with 11 wins.

Sanford Goldfarb clinched the owners' title at the Big A fall meet with eight wins. He completed the meet with a 22-8-3-3 record and $308,809 in earnings. Gatsas Stables finished second [seven wins] with Linda Rice and Winning Move Stable finishing in a tie for third [five wins].

Jockey Jorge Ruiz Released From Hospital, Will Ride Wednesday

Sun, 2024-12-29 17:21

Jockey Jorge Ruiz, who fell shortly after the start of the first race at Gulfstream Park Saturday, was released from Aventura Hospital Saturday night after receiving stitches above his left eye.

Ruiz, a 39-year-old native of Argentina, was hurt after being thrown to the turf course when his mount, 3-year-old filly Roscoe Village (Kantharos), stumbled and fell shortly after the start of Saturday's opener. Roscoe Village was uninjured.

The track safety siren and lights were activated as Ruiz was being helped off track, causing several riders to pull up and resulting in the race being declared a no contest.

Ruiz ranked in the top 10 in both wins (eight) and purse earnings ($282,235) during the 2024-2025 Championship Meet, which began Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28.

Replaced on his four mounts Sunday, Ruiz said he expects to return to riding Wednesday when he is named in five races at Gulfstream.

Forever Young Earns Elusive Group 1 In Tokyo Daishoten

Sun, 2024-12-29 13:44

Twice a winner at group level on foreign soil and placed in two of America's greatest races in 2024, Susumu Fujita's Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) patched the one hole that existed in an already remarkable career, coming from just off the speed before proving comfortably best in a high-class renewal of the G1 Toyko Daishoten at Ohi Racecourse.

In defeating the consistent Wilson Tesoro (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) and fellow 3-year-old Ramjet (Jpn) (Majestic Warrior), the son of US Grade II winner Forever Darling (Congrats) was succeeding for the first–and in all likelihood–not the last time at the highest level.

“He's a horse that's aiming to be the best in the world, so I felt like I couldn't lose in Japan,” said winning jockey Ryusei Sakai. “I'll do my best [for him] to become the world champion next year.”

The $1.30 (3-10) jolly was exiting a third-place effort to his 'TDN Rising Star' close relative Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) when arguably too close to the pace in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 2 and jumped alertly from barrier four before allowing fellow G2 UAE Derby hero Crown Pride (Jpn) (Reach the Crown {Jpn}) to take up the running at the first corner of the right-turning track. Tracking comfortably from second down the back straight as Crown Pride set the pace a path or two off the inside running rail, Forever Young was ridden along to maintain his spot 600 metres out and was poised to strike under a bit of urging on the swing for home.

Roused to the front with about a furlong to race, Forever Young crossed the line 1 3/4 lengths to the good of recent G1 Champions Cup runner-up Wilson Tesoro to give big-spending owner Susumu Fujita his first top-level success. Ramjet sat an inside trip and battled on gamely for third ahead of the swansonging 7-year-old Ushba Tesoro (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}), winner of this contest the last two seasons.

The latter used the 2022 Daishoten as a springboard to success in the G1 Dubai World Cup three months later, and tentative plans call for Forever Young to first return to Saudi Arabia–where he overcame a world of adversity in the G3 Saudi Derby this past February–for a crack at the world's richest race, the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup, a contest won by the Yoshito Yahagi-trained Panthalassa (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) in 2023. All things equal, the colt would travel on to Dubai for the World Cup six weeks later.

The Daishoten was just the second Japanese appearance of the year for Forever Young, who took out the Oct. 2 Listed Japan Dirt Classic over course and distance when prepping for the Breeders' Cup. That was his first run after his eventful third in the GI Kentucky Derby five months prior.

Pedigree Notes:

Winner of the 2016 GII Santa Ynez Stakes, Forever Darling is the dam of four winners from five to race, ncluding Forever Young's 2-year-old half-sister Brown Ratchet (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}), who carried the Sunday Racing colors to a 1 1/2-length success in an 1800-meter turf event for debutantes at Nakayama Sept. 16 before adding the G3 Artemis Stakes.

Given her female family, it is not entirely surprising that Forever Darling might end up in Japan. Her stakes-winning and multiple Grade-I placed dam Darling My Darling is responsible for 2017 GI Darley Alcibiades Stakes victress Heavenly Love (Malibu Moon), the dam of the aforementioned Sierra Leone, and Darling My Darling is a half-sister to Japanese Horse of the Year and G1 Japan Cup hero Zenno Rob Roy (Jpn).

Forever Darling is also the dam of a yearling filly by Epiphaneia (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S), a weanling colt by Rey de Oro (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) this past April and is due to foal a full-sibling to Forever Young in 2025.

Motorious Gets the Job Done in the Joe Hernandez

Sat, 2024-12-28 17:29

Fresh off a second-place finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, Anthony Fanticola's Motorious (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) captured Saturday's GII Joe Hernandez Stakes down the hill at Santa Anita. After bobbling slightly out of the gate, Motorious settled kindly midpack behind a :21.71 and :43.78 pace set by 60-1 Code Duello (Honor Code). Extremely wide after crossing the dirt, he stayed on his wrong lead for several beats before hooking up with two-back Lure Stakes winner Sumter (War Front) in the lane. Sumter was slightly quicker as the two mowed down the leader and pulled clear of the rest in a battle to the wire. Finally on even terms just a few jumps before the finish, the two surged to the line with Motorious prevailing by a head. The hard-trying Irideo (Arg) (Easing Along), a Group 1 winner in Argentina and Grade I-placed in North America, got up for third.

“[Motorious has] proved to be a very good horse sprinting and going down the hill,” said winning rider Antonio Fresu. “Today I tried to give him a really good warm up. He was kind of slow in the beginning and it was kind of hard to get into his rhythm.  When I let him loose down the lane he just kept grinding and I thought he finished best.”

A winner in England, where he started his career under conditioner Stuart Williams, Motorious has been in the U.S. with Phil D'Amato since late 2021 after Craig Rounesfell's Boomer Bloodstock picked him up for 220,000gns at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale. He's improved every year, taking the GIII San Simeon Stakes and GIII Green Flash Handicap in 2023 before repeating in the Green Flash this summer, getting that second in the Breeders' Cup, and now adding the Joe Hernandez. Saturday's win and the San Simeon were at 6 1/2 furlongs, while the others were at five panels.

“You have to be a really good horse to adapt to the different distances,” said D'Amato. “He has a great turn of foot and I think that older disposition that he's had now has helped him in these victories.”

D'Amato said Motorious will be freshened before kicking off a 7-year-old campaign in the spring.

Pedigree Notes:

Muhaarar, who stands at France's Haras du Petit Tellier, is the sire of 30 black-type winners and 15 graded winners. The son of Oasis Dream (GB), a triple Group 1 winner during his own career, has also been represented by another 2024 multiple graded U.S. winner in Be Your Best (Ire).

Motorious has a 2-year-old unraced half-brother by Sergei Prokofiev who sold in Book 1 of the Tattersalls October sale in 2023, hammering for 220,000gns to SackvilleDonald. His yearling half-sister by Ardad (Ire) sold in Book 2 at Tattersalls October this year, bringing 420,000gns from Amo Racing. Dam Squash, herself multiple group placed, hails from the same extended family of GISW and Claiborne sire Lea.

MOTORIOUS (GB) ($3.80) grinds out the win and bests a game Sumter in the $200,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes (G2) at @SantaAnitaPark. @Antonio1Fresu was in the irons for trainer @PhilDamato11.

Nyquist’s One Man Team All Alone on the Wire in Heft Stakes

Sat, 2024-12-28 17:20

One Man Team (Nyquist) backed up his sparkling debut with another sterling performance in the Heft Stakes to claim his career first black-type.

Employing a similar strategy as in his debut Oct. 31, when he took a field gate to wire to win by six lengths, the 5-2 second betting choice once again took command out of the gate. Rating well through :23.22 and :47.18 early splits, he handled a would-be challenger on the turn, and opened a clear advantage coming for home. Coasting home, he was 4 1/4 lengths ahead of 7-5 favorite SW Sacred Thunder (Holy Boss), who won the runner-up photo by a neck over Barbadian Runner (Barbados).

The second winner from two to the races for Holiday Music, One Man Team's winning elder sibling is a 3-year-old filly named Mocha Grande (Uncle Mo). Their dam has a yearling full-brother to the winner named Be Someone as well as a 2024 Tapit colt in the wings. She went to Flightline for 2025. Mufasa Upsets White Abarrio in Mr. Prospector

Sat, 2024-12-28 17:11

Billed as a showdown between the classy Mufasa (Chi) (Practical Joke) and the 2023 GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner White Abarrio (Race Day), Gulfstream Park's Saturday feature, the GIII Mr. Prospector Stakes at seven furlongs, didn't disappoint. Mufasa got a perfect stalking trip which turned into a resounding win, while White Abarrio was slow out of the gate and trailed early before making a late run that couldn't quite catch Mufasa in the stretch. Little Vic (Practical Joke), the 2023 GIII Tom Fool Handicap winner, was third.

Winner of the GIII Vosburgh Stakes over the same distance Sept 28, Carlos Saavedra and Stud Vendaval's Mufasa was exiting a flubbed effort in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile Nov. 2 won by Full Serrano (Arg) (Full Mast). Rank early that day, he was never a factor after weakening late.

The Mr. Prospector marked his return to seven panels, a distance the dark bay has tried five times in his career and in which he's never been beaten. Prior to the Vosburgh, Mufasa had taken an optional allowance at Colonial Downs at the distance–setting a new track record of 1:19.86 while getting a 99 Beyer Speed Figure–and he has also won twice at seven furlongs in his native Chile. In addition to his pair of graded wins in the U.S. under the tutelage of Ignacio Correas IV, Mufasa also won a Group 3 in Chile for Ximeno Francisco Urenda Pastene while going 1 1/8 miles.

Mufasa broke cleanly in the Mr. Prospector while White Abarrio stuttered slightly, just enough to immediately find himself a half step behind. A joint last early, White Abarrio was forced to play catch up while Mufasa settled kindly into the second spot behind a pacesetting MGISW in Super Chow (Lord Nelson). The latter covered a first quarter in :22.77 and a half in :45.41 with Mufasa glued to his flank as White Abarrio, who captured a Nov. 22 optional allowance at Gulfstream by 10 1/4 lengths after unplaced efforts in the G1 Saudi Cup and GI Met Mile earlier this year, unfurled his stride on the turn, but Mufasa already had command at the top of the lane and was kept on task and in the clear by Tyler Gaffalione. White Abarrio swung wide into the stretch and despite being willing, had too much to do and couldn't catch Mufasa after linking up with Little Vic for the final strides. Mufasa's margin of victory was 1 1/4 lengths, with White Abarrio a neck in front of Little Vic.

Pleased with Mufasa's win, Correas was eager to cross a line through the Dirt Mile. “I saw the horse [Saturday] that I saw in the Vosburgh and I saw in the race at Colonial Downs,” he said. “I thought that was probably my mistake [in the Breeders' Cup] thinking it was better to go two turns than stay sprinting. We talked with the owners and that was the decision we made, probably not the right one. We're going to try to keep him sprinting and see where he takes us.”

“He's a tremendously talented colt,” said Gaffalione of Mufasa. “He put me in the game, put me where I needed to be, traveled great throughout, gave me a ton of confidence coming into the stretch, and finished the job well.”

White Abarrio's connections weren't unhappy with his effort. “You always want to win,” said trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. “Did we think we were going to win before the race? Yes. But considering the circumstances, he ran hard. I looked back at a certain point and I was, like, 'Whoa.' I couldn't believe how far back he was. He's never been that far back in his life. As much dirt as he took, I was happy to see him run through that. He looked like he was finishing as good as you can finish.”

Pedigree Notes:

Coolmore America's Practical Joke is the sire of 29 graded winners from his 43 black-type winners. In addition to his North American success, where his winners this year at the highest level include H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes victor Domestic Product and Test Stakes victress Ways and Means, he's had a number of Group 1 winners in Chile, including champions El Oriente (Chi), Soqui (Chi), and Richi (Chi). The latter has been imported to the U.S. and served as the workmate to GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Citizen Bull (Into Mischief) Saturday. Those three champions, like Mufasa and four other graded Practical Joke winners, are all out of daughters of Coolmore's late Scat Daddy. Practical Joke was also represented by a new 'TDN Rising Star' Saturday at Aqueduct in Captain Cook.

Miscanti's five reported foals have all been by Coolmore sires, with her most recent being a yearling colt by Tiz the Law named Millelche (Chi). In addition to Mufasa, she has also produced a black-type performer in Mistela (Chi) (Classic Empire). The mare is a great-granddaughter of Mi Quimera (Arg), Argentina's champion 2-year-old filly of 1980. Despite Mufasa's second dam being foaled in Florida, the female family has been in South America since being imported from England in the late 1800s.

Liam’s Map Gelding Burnham Square Much The Best In Gulfstream Maiden

Sat, 2024-12-28 16:33

7th-Gulfstream, $40,000, Msw, 12-28, 2yo, 1 1/16m, 1:44.31, ft, 9 lengths.
BURNHAM SQUARE (g, 2, Liam's Map–Linda {GSW, $407,310}, by Scat Daddy) was just a half-length short in a $150,000 maiden claimer at Keeneland Oct. 26 and was again narrowly beaten when stepping into maiden special weight company at Churchill going this distance Nov. 30. Adding the blinkers Saturday, the 6-5 favorite was kept right up on the pace early, surged forward to handle the tempo up the backstretch and was much the class of this field as he led 'Insight' runner Only in America (Constitution) in by nine lengths with the runner up a further 7 3/4-lengths clear. Linda, who was sold for $55,000 at KEEJAN this year, had her yearling Connect colt bring $100,000 at FTKOCT and foaled an Oscar Performance colt this spring. She is due back to Life Is Good. Take Charge Tom Is First Stakes Winner For Tom’s d’Etat

Fri, 2024-12-27 18:23

Take Charge Tom (Tom's d'Etat) rolled by 9 1/4 lengths in his unveiling in a $30,000 maiden claimer over course and near distance Dec. 4 and jumped into stakes company Friday. The 4-5 favorite had plenty of company up front, dueling with Roman Gratis (Stanford) and Manzoni (Lotsa Mischief) early and having to put away a determined Candy Caballo around the far turn. Narrowly ahead of that rival into the stretch, he just edged away in the late stages to win ahead of a closing Don't Fly Stand By (Upstart). The first stakes winner for his freshman sire (by Smart Strike), Take Charge Tom has a yearling half-brother by Candy Ride (Arg) and a weanling half-sister by Twirling Candy. White Abarrio Continues Comeback March in Mr. Prospector

Fri, 2024-12-27 17:48

Drawn in the 10-hole for this next stop on his comeback tour, MGISW White Abarrio (Race Day) will tackle 11 others in Saturday's GIII Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream Park all while keeping an eye on the GI Pegasus World Cup in January.

The class of the field with the numbers and earnings to match in this seven-furlong contest, White Abarrio was given 3-5 morning line favoritism to work with despite likely being lower when the gates open. After his 10 1/4-length romp last out Nov. 22 against local optional claiming company, Saffie Joseph Jr. has the grey primed for another step toward that goal..

“He handled it well. There was a lot of pressure on him going in and we were happy to see him bounce back,” Joseph said. “It seemed that his performance was up to his previous good ones, so hopefully he'll come back in this race and do the same.”

“He seems to have come forward from that race, which is a good sign. Hopefully, all the signs lead to a good performance on Saturday.”

That isn't to say he'll have it easy with distance specialist GSW & GSW-Chi Mufasa (Chi) (Practical Joke) looking to rebound off a disappointing 11th in the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile Nov. 2 at Del Mar and play the spoiler here. The GIII Vosburgh Stakes winner has been given 9-2 morning line odds.

Immaculately Bred Justify Colt March of Time Returns a Winner at Santa Anita

Fri, 2024-12-27 17:02

4th-Santa Anita, $60,000, Msw, 12-27, 3, 4,/5yo, 6f, 1:09.03, ft, 2 1/4 lengths.
MARCH OF TIME (c, 3, Justify–Untouched Talent {GSW & GISP, $243,550}, by Storm Cat) went missing for over a year after finishing a strong second on his lone other appearance to date at Los Alamitos, but made up for lost time Friday, sprinting clear through the final eighth of a mile to graduate in sharp time. Very quickly into stride for Juan Hernandez, the beautifully bred bay was displaced on the front end by the debuting $725,000 Keeneland September grad Pursuit of Freedom (Speightstown), who blazed a trail from the front. Kept within striking distance on the turn, March of Time was asked for his best leaving the quarter pole, went to the weakening pacesetter outside the furlong grounds and pulled away to take it by 2 1/4 lengths. March of Time is owned in partnership by former Houston Astros third-baseman Alex Bregman, pitcher and Lexington native Walker Buehler–newly signed by the Boston Red Sox after plying his trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2017–and Jill Baffert. The winner's GIII Sorrento Stakes-winning dam has also produced former Bob Baffert trainees Bodemeister (Empire Maker), GISW, $1,304,800, and Under the Stars (Pioneerof the Nile), MGSW, $361,520; Himiko (American Pharoah), SP, $177,277; and Fascinating (Smart Strike), MGISP, $166,320. Also a half-sister to the dam of GI La Troienne Stakes heroine She's A Julie (Elusive Quality), Untouched Talent has a 2-year-old colt by Uncle Mo and her last listed produce is a weanling colt by the late sire. Troubled Sam Houston to Cut Purses at Upcoming Meet

Fri, 2024-12-27 14:53

Starting with the Jan. 10 card, purses will be cut at Sam Houston Race Park as there is uncertainty about funding mechanisms going forward for purses.

Bryan Pettigrew, the vice president and general manager of Texas Racing Operations, contacted horsemen Thursday to give them advance warning of the cuts. Due to legal issues involving HISA, the Texas Thoroughbred tracks can no longer send their simulcast signal out of state. While that has decimated handle, purses have held their own thanks to the Texas Thoroughbred Association receiving funds from something called the Horse Industry Escrow Account (HIEA). Each year up to $25 million from sales tax on purchased horse-related items (feed, tack, etc.) is deposited into the HIEA and up to 70% of the funds can be spent on purses. It covers all racing breeds in the state.

According to Pettigrew's email there is “uncertainty” over the Texas Thoroughbred Association continuing to receive money from HIEA and it appears that money will not be available when Sam Houston opens Jan. 3. The matter cannot be resolved until a February meeting of the Texas Racing Commission.

Purses will be adjusted for races during Week 2 (Jan. 10-12), through Week 7 (ending Feb. 16).

Maiden special weight races will be reduced from $40,000 to $33,000. There will also be a reduction in purses for “non-winners” allowance races from $40,000 to $33,000. In addition, there will be one less race a day through Feb. 16, for a total of 18 fewer races.

Pettigrew wrote that once the February Texas Racing Commission meeting is completed further adjustments may be made.

Outspoken owner Karl Broberg took to X to express his opinion, tweeting “Late Christmas gift courtesy of the amazing leadership we have seen since Texas Racing Commission went off the rails in their quest to make Texas racing irrelevant. #ExcellenceStartsHere.”

“I Am Going to Dominate the Turf”- John Stewart Goes on Christmas Buying Spree

Fri, 2024-12-27 13:31

There were plenty of presents under John Stewart's Christmas Tree this week, including two Group I winners from South America and an Australian pedigree research site, pedigreees360.com. that he has purchased.

The Argentine purchase is Pulp Fiction (Arg) (Daddy Long Legs), a 3-year-old filly. Pulp Fiction has raced just four times but one of the wins came in the G1 Polla de Potrancas. She was also third in the G3 Manuel J. Guiraldes S.

From Chile, Stewart's Resolute Racing has acquired another 3-year-old filly in Dona Clota (Chi) (Delfa ({Chi}). She is a two-time Group I winner in Chile and will be pointed for the Jan. 25 GII Pegasus World Cup Turf Filly & Mare Invitational at Gulfstream.

Both horses will be trained in the U.S. by Ignacio Correas.

“Dona Clota, we think could be a freak,” Stewart said. “She has beat the boys twice in Group I's and we purchased her with the intent of pointing her toward the Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf.”

Stewart will also run Pounce (Lookin at Lucky) in the Filly & Mare Turf.

Stewart said he has been inundated with people looking to sell him horses.

“We have been using social media to circumvent the traditional methods which leads to over 100 horses per week being offered to us from all over the world. Of course, we are focused on enhancing the herd in North America so bringing diversity back to the U.S. is important.

“Some of the markets that have been dependent on Kentucky for seeding their herds have similar pedigrees back three or four generations. But the most recent generations have developed differently from North America.”

“We are excited to add these to our turf group that includes nine stakes winning horses we purchased recently at Tattersalls and Arqana along with our current group of turf runners.”

He's also well stocked when it comes to his soon-to-be 3-year-olds

“In addition, we have 27 more two-year-olds turning three that people don't even know about.”

But it is in the turf division that he believes will prove most successful.

“I told everyone I was going to dominate the turf,” Stewart said, “For those talking about me and Resolute, I will let the horses do the talking for me on the track.”

As for pedigrees360.com, Stewart described it as an Australian pedigree research site.

“It was formed from the founders of Goldmine and uses next generation AI and machine learning,” he said. “I am going to expand it into a full suite of services for owners, breeders and horseplayers. The technology has been a major factor in the data analysis that has enabled Resolute Bloodstock to have the tremendous success we have had purchasing horses of racing age and evaluating horses at auction. Once I validated the technology behind the system I targeted it for acquisition, the current pedigrees360 management team and employees will continue to operate the site for existing customers. I will be investing significant working capital into the future of the business. I believe harnessing the current generation of technology will enable incremental benefits for horse owners, breeders and horseplayers.”

Opening-Day Attendance, All-Sources Handle Up at Santa Anita

Thu, 2024-12-26 22:10

An announced on-track crowd of 41,562 welcomed the return of live racing to Santa Anita Thursday afternoon, the largest non-weekend or holiday crowd on opening day since 1990 and biggest opening-day crowd in eight years, track officials said late Thursday. Total all-sources handle of more than $21.4 million was the third-highest in track history for an opening-day program and marked a 17.4% increase over 2023. It was the fourth time in the last seven years that handle exceeded $20 million.

“Our Racing Office offered an exceptional program, the owners and trainers supported it, and the horseplayers and fans strongly responded to kick off our 90th year,” said Nate Newby, Santa Anita's SVP & General Manager. “We are thankful to everyone who worked hard to make it a success, especially those who joined us to not only witness terrific racing but enjoy the events on track.  The Southern California weather could not have been more cooperative, and this was a terrific way to start the celebration at The Great Race Place.”

The afternoon featured not only three Grade I races for 3-year-olds and a record-breaking performance from jockey Flavien Prat, but also included the inaugural running of the GII Laffit Pincay, Jr. Stakes, with the hall of famer on hand to make the trophy presentation. Pincay, Jr. turns 78 this coming weekend.

Stewart: ‘Didia Not Retired’ But Will Miss Defense of Pegasus F/M Turf

Thu, 2024-12-26 21:42

Contrary to statements given to the Gulfstream Park press office by trainer Ignacio Correas IV, Merriebelle Stable and Resolute Racing's Grade I winner Didia (Arg) (Orpen–Delambre {Brz}, by Rainbow Corner) has not been retired from racing and is currently resting at Resolute Farm, part-owner John Stewart said on X late Thursday. Stewart did indicate that the mare would be forced to miss a defense of her title in the GIII Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

“It has been a rough couple of days for @resracingky,” Stewart posted. “There was a press release issued today about DIDIA being retired.

We have NOT retired DIDIA. DIDIA will not be competing in the Pegasus due to a procedure she had a couple of days ago.

She is currently resting on our farm.”

A two-time Group 1 winner and champion 3-year-old filly in her native Argentina, Didia won the first four starts of her U.S. campaign, culminating with a win in the GIII Modesty Stakes at Churchill Downs in May 2023. She was runner-up in the GI New York Stakes that June before returning to the winner's circle in the GII Rodeo Drive Stakes in October.

Didia opened 2024 with a win in the Pegasus World Cup F/M Turf and added John Stewart's Resolute Racing to her ownership line after that effort. The 6-year-old mare returned to be third for the new partnership in the Apr. 12 GI Jenny Wiley Stakes and won the New York Stakes at Saratoga in June. She was mostly third in the Nov. 2 GI Breeders' Cup F/M Turf. On the board in 15 of 20 starts, Didia has won 11 times and amassed earnings of $1,754,511.

Looking for his next star for Resolute Racing, Correas will saddle Tutta La Vita (The Autumn Sun {Aus}) in her North American debut in Saturday's opener at Gulfstream, an optional claiming allowance for filles and mares, three and up, scheduled for one mile on the turf.

“It's very exciting. She's training very well. It's her first time in America and we hope she runs a good race,” Correas said. “She's done well since she's been here; if not, we would have waited longer. We're looking forward to her running.”

Stewart purchased Tutta La Vita, a three-time Group 1-placed mare in Australia, for $2,105,447 from the Inglis Chairman Sale in the spring.

She Feels Pretty A Towering Winner of the American Oaks

Thu, 2024-12-26 19:54

A victory in the GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup can lead even the most disciplined connections to call an audible, deviating from a more conservative approach in favor of a start in a race as alluring as the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf just weeks later.

But trainer Cherie DeVaux and the Lael Stables of Roy and Gretchen stuck to their guns and sent the enormously talented She Feels Pretty (Karakontie {Jpn}) to California for the American Oaks, another chance at age-restricted Grade I glory while putting loftier objectives on the back-burner, until this time next year, for example. The $240,000 Keeneland September yearling ensured that the team would be sufficiently pleased with the course they elected to chart, as she stormed down the Santa Anita stretch to stamp her authority on the race while touting herself as one to tab closely in the distaff turf division in 2025.

Off as the 3-5 jolly, the $240,000 Keeneland September yearling broke cleanly, but she clearly attempted to hurdle the lip of the dirt crossing and tugged fiercely against John Velazquez from an early midfield berth to be fourth in the slipstream of 58-1 Valence (Violence) as they reached the first turn. Velazquez edged out one path to his right and raced three deep and punching the breeze with fully six furlongs to travel, and the rider had two fists full of rein as he did his level best to get the strapping filly to settle down the back.

Left in a bit of a tricky spot when Frankie Dettori went for an early move astride Kathynmarissa (American Pharoah) with less than a half-mile to race, She Feels Pretty was deftly steered off that one's heels and four wide into the clear midway on the second bend. When Velazquez finally acquiesced and finally allowed She Feels Pretty to have her head nearing the quarter pole, the response was both immediate and devastating, as she sprinted her final two furlongs in a very slick :22.63 to win by a comfortable margin. Medoro (Honor Code) finished a distant third to round out a trifecta that returned less than 13-1.

“She got a little keen, broke a little slow and then when she passed the dirt she took like a weird step and then she got up and started running up,” Velazquez said. “I wanted to keep her covered up, she is much better covered up, but today she was really keen. I put her right behind the horse in front of me and I held her the best I could.”

The result was considerably more satisfying for team She Feels Pretty than her last trip to the Great Race Place, when the GI Natalma Stakes heroine just failed to overcome a horror draw when third, beaten a half-length, in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf nearly 14 months ago.

Highly impressive in annexing the May 17 Hilltop Stakes on seasonal return, she was narrowly defeated by the classy Cinderella's Dream (GB) (Shamardal) in the July 6 GI Belmont Oaks–a race that now roughly occupies the spot on the racing calendar once held by the original iteration of the American Oaks–and was beaten a frustrating neck in the GII Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga Aug. 17. Whatever lingering disappointment there may have been was well and truly washed away when She Feels Pretty bolted up by a half-dozen lengths in Lexington 75 days ago and from here, the sky appears to be the limit.

Pedigree Notes:

Along with 2022 Del Mar Oaks victress Spendarella, She Feels Pretty is one of two elite-level scorers for her sire, who caused a 30-1 upset as a 3-year-old in the 2014 GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita.

The winner's dam, a $550,000 purchase by Payson Stud as an early 2-year-old at Keeneland January in 2016, is a daughter of French listed winner Summer Solstice, the dam of SW Summer Breezing (Langfuhr), SW & GSP Adirondack Summer (Thunder Gulch) and Belmont Oaks third Summer Solo (Arch), herself responsible for GSW Solo Album (Curlin) and SW & GSP Maedean (Tapit).

Summer Sweet is also the dam of the 2-year-old colt Summer Vibes (Good Magic), who fetched $600,000 from Boardshorts Stables at the 2023 KEESEP sale two days before She Feels Pretty took the Natalma and is currently in training at Palm Meadows. The current yearling out of Summer Sweet, a filly named She Feels Stunning (American Pharoah), was hammered down to Lael for $650,000 at Keeneland this past September, and She Feels Pretty's year-older half-sister Lakeside Music (Super Saver) was acquired by Whisper Hill Farm for $400,000 in foal to Munnings at KEENOV last month. Summer Sweet claims a weanling filly by Olympiad and was most recently covered by Justify.

Johannes Far Too Classy in the San Gabriel

Thu, 2024-12-26 17:29

Trying nine furlongs for just the second time in his career and looking to protect a perfect mark over the Santa Anita turf course, Cuyathy LLC's Johannes (Nyquist) was given a supremely confident steer by Umberto Rispoli and was really only asked to finish up to post a soft victory in Thursday's GII San Gabriel Stakes.

Crunched into long odds-on favoritism to improve on his hard-nosed runner-up effort behind More Than Looks (More Than Ready) in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile down at Del Mar on Nov. 2, the homebred raced in close attendance to whatever pace was on as Cabo Spirit (Pioneerof the Nile) ambled them along through the early exchanges beneath Frankie Dettori. Johannes enjoyed the run of the race from just in behind, but was hemmed in along the rail for the trip around the second turn and was held together by a very patient Rispoli nearing the stretch.

Eased out into the four-wide line, Johannes came with his typically strong finish to easily account for last-out GII Seabiscuit Handicap hero Mi Hermano Ramon (Creative Cause), fortifying his bid for an Eclipse Award next month. Seal Team (GB) (War Front), three wide the majority of the trip, held for third.

Johannes is likely to make his next appearance in the GI Pegasus World Cup Turf at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 25.

“We originally thought about giving the horse a breather,” said winning trainer Tim Yakteen. “He had such a strong campaign and he came out of the Breeders' Cup so well. Everything was near perfect in his last outing, so we came to the San Gabriel and now we will head to the Pegasus. In my heart, he is a true champion. I hope others view it that way.”

Added Rispoli, “You know, with a horse like him, it's not possible to panic. You press the button and in three strides, you're right up there. You just have to manage how to get the wire because once you get the lead, you try to wait for other horses. But, you know, you never panic with him. Once you see the daylight, he goes. It doesn't matter.”

Winner of three of his first four starts on the grass, Johannes returned from an 11-month absence to take out this track's GIII American Stakes going a mile Apr. 4 before breaking through for a maiden Grade I in the May 27 Shoemaker Mile Stakes. The dark bay tried this distance for the first time in the GII Eddie Read Stakes July 28, easily defeating Dicey Mo Chara (GB) (Adaay {Ire}), and was a comfortable winner of the local GII City of Hope Mile Stakes Sept. 28. The 22-5 second choice in the Mile, he came with a run from midpack to loom a threat in the final furlong, only to be outfinished by a flying More Than Looks.

Pedigree Notes:

In the name of their Cuyathy, Joe and Debby McCloskey purchased Johannes's dam for $50,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November Sale and raced her to three wins from 20 tries and a third placing in the Kalookan Queen Stakes in 2018. Johannes is the first foal from the mare, who is also responsible for Sea Dancer, recent winner of the Carousel Stakes at Laurel Park, and the juvenile filly Sea Runner (Gun Runner), third in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar Sept. 7 and fourth in the GIII Jimmy Durante Stakes at Del Mar at the end of November. A half-sister to the multiple graded-placed Join in the Dance (Sky Mesa), Cuyathy is the dam of a yearling filly by Knicks Go named Soaring Angel, missed to Mandaloun for 2024 and is due to Maxfield for her 2025 foal.

J B Strikes Back Upsets Inaugural Laffit Pincay, Jr. Stakes

Thu, 2024-12-26 16:53

Longshot J B Strikes Back (Goldencents) upset the inaugural running of the GII Laffit Pincay, Jr. Stakes (previously run as the San Antonio Stakes) Thursday in his first try facing stakes company for trainer Doug O'Neill.

The 3-year-old gelding, understandably one of the least experienced runners in the field and the second longest wagering price, broke his maiden in his third start in a $20,000 claimer at Del Mar and was claimed out of that start from these same connections who promptly bought him right back in a $25,000 conditioned claimer when he was sixth in his very next start. Off the board in his next two tries over both dirt and turf, J B Strikes Back jumped up to put up a big number in an optional claimer going one mile at Del Mar Nov. 3 and responded with yet another win facing similar company at the same distance Nov. 23.

Guided from an inside draw with Antonio Fresu taking over from Juan Hernandez, J B Strikes Back was briefly outrun as the field passed the wire for the first time but quickly got himself into stride to contend for the lead outside of Ashcroft (Munnings) around the first turn and into the backstretch. Still two wide and joined by Tarantino (Pioneerof the Nile) to his outside nearing the half-mile pole, J B Strikes Back took advantage of Ashcroft fading along the rail to shoot ahead and turned for home with both Tarantino and Express Train (Union Rags) looming. But with a safe margin built up, the 16-1 chance turned the tables on the older horses and came home clear with only 20-1 shot American Admiral (American Pharoah) making up ground on him late and just missing for the placing.

“It's such an honor to win this race,” said O'Neil. “My mom Dixie was really good friends with Laffit Pincay Jr.'s mom and we are really good friends with his brother Alonso, so the Pincay family really means a lot to us. He still looks like he can still ride today, it's amazing and a huge honor. Janie Buss and the whole Buss family they are so generous. She donates all of the earnings of any of her beautiful horses that make any money to different causes. This is really to her because she wanted to take a chance after his last couple of efforts. We took a chance, and it worked out perfect.”

Fresu added: “My trip was great, amazing it was what we had planned. What about this training performance by Doug (O'Neill)? This horse he kept improving and now he is in graded stakes, that was amazing. I feel very excited to see where he goes next. Today, what I was thinking was if the track was fast, to get a nice trip out in front, or be pretty close. I thought the horse had a good chance. He proved to us his ability.”

Pedigree Notes:

J B Strikes Back is now the second graded stakes winner under stakes-winning first dam Allanah, joining his talented older half-brother Reincarnate (Good Magic) who took the GIII Sham Stakes and also placed in the GI Arkansas Derby, the GI FanDuel Racing Pacific Classic Stakes and the GI Santa Anita Handicap. Allanah, who last went under the hammer for $105,000 at Keeneland November in 2018, is a half to MGSP Over Emphasize (Overanalyze) and this is the family of two-time Peruvian champion grass horse Zeide Isaac (Freud). J B Strikes Back, the eighth graded stakes winner for Goldencents, has an un-raced 2-year-old half-brother by Liam's Map and a weanling half-sister by Good Magic while Allanah went to Life Is Good for 2025.

J B STRIKES BACK ($34.80) struck back big in the $200,000 Laffit Pincay Jr. Stakes (G2) at @santaanitapark. The gelding by Goldencents (@spendthriftfarm) is trained by @DougONeill1, @Antonio1Fresu was up!
