Jak N Burny in time for Leon Reed win

New York Thoroughbred Breeders - Mon, 2025-07-14 18:35

Jak N Burny fends off longshots for another Finger Lakes victory in Monday’s Leon Reed Memorial. SV Photography

A last-gasp head win at the wire. A steward’s inquiry at the start. For owner/breeder Sherry Washburn and trainer Debra Breed, the Leon Reed Memorial had 1:11.98 of it all.

Ridden by regular rider Joel Cruz, the 5-year-old son of Destin did what he does best, breaking sharply, blitzing to the front and then hanging tough to the line. Sent off the favorite in the 6-furlong stakes, Jak N Burny held off 39-1 Crypto Causeway who rallied late along the rail. Newport Bridge at 93-1 finished third with second-choice Rotknee fading to fourth in the $50,000 sprint stakes.

Breaking from the inside of the field 10, Jak N Burny angled out, initiating a six-horse chain reaction before darting back to the rail. The bay gelding opened a half-length through the first quarter in :22.50 and a half in :45.37. Jak N Burny dispatched Looms Boldly by the quarter pole, widened a 3-length chasm turning for home and looked free until the waning strides. Head rising with each stride, Jak N Burny managed to get to the wire just in time for his second stakes win. Stewards looked at the start but let the results stand. Crypto Causeway was untouched, and Newport Ridge was bothered slightly in the opening strides.

Jak N Burny improved his record to eight wins and two seconds from 11 starts for $184,180. His only off-the-board finish came in the 2023 Reed when he hopped and bobbled at the start and wound up fourth. It was the only time he wasn’t on the engine at the first two calls of a race.

Jak N Burny is the fifth foal out of the winning New York-bred Duckhorn mare Betty’s Chance. He’s a half-brother to 2018 Leon Reed winner Winston’s Chance who earned $495,264 in a 14-win career and Ifihadachance, a 13-time winner and $447,914-earner.

Betty’s Chance, bred by Washburn and Michael Haers, went 2-3-0 in six starts for $23,930 in earnings. She’s also the dam of the 3-year-old New York-bred Cloudy Chance, who was also bred by Washburn. The daughter of Cloud Computing finished third in her career debut in February and followed with a fourth at Belmont Park at Aqueduct and an eighth at Saratoga July 5.

Lottie Margaret slips through inside to win New York Oaks

New York Thoroughbred Breeders - Mon, 2025-07-14 15:44

A hop in the air at the start of Monday’s $75,000 New York Oaks at Finger Lakes proved to be no problem for Madaket Stable’s Lottie Margaret, the convincing winner of the 1 1/16-mile race for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies.

The daughter of Global Campaign settled into stride several lengths behind her three rivals after that start. She saved ground going into the first turn under Manny Franco to put herself in third, within 2 lengths of the lead, through the opening quarter-mile.

Tracking the pace set by Mischief Lady, Lottie Margaret stayed glued to the rail along the backstretch through opening fractions of :24.34 and :48.57. Entering the far turn, Franco sat motionless on Lottie Margaret as the rest of the field started being asked for their runs. Franco guided his filly through an opening on the inside nearing the quarter pole, and the pair had no trouble finishing from there.

Lottie Margaret won by 3 lengths in 1:46.53 as the longest shot in the field at 7-2. Valtellina finished second, followed by Vehemente and Mischief Lady. Practically Summer scratched.

Trained by Brad Cox, Lottie Margaret earned her first stakes victory in the New York Oaks. She entered the race off a fifth in an allowance-optional against open company and a second in the state-bred Maddie May Stakes, both run at 1 mile at Aqueduct. Prior to that, she broke her maiden and won an allowance-optional against state-breds by a combined 20 1/4 lengths. Her victory Monday boosted her record to three wins in six starts with earnings of $165,020.

Bred by Steve Schuster and foaled at Old Saratoga Equine Services in Schuylerville, Lottie Margaret sold for $75,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale in August 2023. She’s the sixth foal and first stakes winner out of the Street Cry mare Passionate Diva, whose other foals include the three-time winner and stakes-placed Mashnee Girl. Passionate Diva has foaled two other winners in Cape Cod Diva and I’m More Ready. She is the dam of the unraced 2-year-old A L Leader, by Code Of Honor.

Beau Liam’s Border Czar Takes Control in My Dear Girl Stakes

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2025-07-12 18:25

Airdrie Stud's Beau Liam (by Liam's Map) got his second black-type winner in his first crop of 2-year-olds–and second in a week–Saturday when Border Czar sailed under the wire in the My Dear Stakes at Woodbine. Beau Liam's juvenile filly Lanaluah had captured the Texas Thoroughbred Association Futurity July 5.

Sent as a 6-1 choice on the all-weather surface, Border Czar broke smartly and settled between horses in the second flight but well behind the :22.17 pace. With rider Rafael Hernandez sitting quietly confident until the turn, the bay tipped out and motored down the stretch a few paths out to win with authority, drifting in but powering by the leaders to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Early trailer Abdul (Tapit) closed late for runner-up honors.

“She's pretty sharp little filly,” said winner trainer and owner Barbara Minshall. “I mean, she loves to train. She was a little sharp going to post and everything. I noticed that. But she's all business. And you ask her to do something, she's all business. And [Rafael Hernandez] has worked her a couple times, he's got to know her even better, and he knew she'd come running.”

Border Czar's only previous start resulted in a neck win going five furlongs over Woodbine's surface June 7. Legion Bloodstock signed the ticket at $25,000 for her at last year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale. Her unplaced dam foaled a Greatest Honour filly Feb. 20 and was bred back to Charge It.

Caravaggio’s Casson Leads Mark Casse Trio in Victoria

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2025-07-12 14:30

Trainer Mark Casse sent three undefeated juveniles into the Victoria Stakes at Woodbine, and Casson (Caravaggio) emerged as the last man standing of that group to keep his perfect record intact by a clear margin.

A four-length winner on unveiling May 11 against local maidens, the gray was a 7-2 chance against his stablemates Jupiter (Upstart) and the flashy Rude Procedure (Authentic). The former went off as the 6-5 favorite and the latter was 2-1.

In no rush initially, Casson had a head on Valley of Kings (Classic Empire) while rating four wide at the :22.79 first quarter, then asserted sole command entering the bend as Rude Procedure tried to match strides. In full flight for the wire by the time they reached the top of the stretch, the victor sailed home by 2 1/2 lengths as Jupiter overtook Rude Procedure in the late yards to nab second, giving Casse the trifecta in the race.

“He broke a little slow,” said winning rider Rafael Hernandez. “He was outside, so he broke a little bit out, and when I tapped him in the shoulder, he started picking up. So, I let him cruise.

“My horse was just kind of waiting for me to start moving there to give me a second gear. I had total confidence.”

The winner's dam, who hails from the same family as 2010 GI Darley Alcibiades Stakes winner Wickedly Perfect (Congrats), has a yearling colt by Authentic and an Apr. 5-foaled filly by Arabian Lion.

Saratoga Maidens, Presented by Keeneland: Dr. Agne with an Emotional First Victory at Saratoga

Thoroughbred Daily News - Fri, 2025-07-11 18:06

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Before the young horse with the easy-going disposition even stepped on the track at Saratoga Race Course Friday afternoon, just about everyone knew the story behind Dr, Agne (Into Mischief), who is out of Lady Eli (Divine Park).

When the 2-year-old colt powered to the finish line and won the seven-furlong, $100,000 maiden special weight, the story came full circle.

Dr. Agne, trained by Cherie DeVaux, is named for Dr. Robert Agne, who died at the age of 54 on Labor Day of 2015 after being hit by a car while cycling in Vermont. Dr. Agne was instrumental in the recovery of Lady Eli, who recovered from laminitis in 2015 and later became an Eclipse Award winner. Dr. Agne worked on Lady Eli along with Dr. Bryan Fraley of Fraley Equine Podiatry in Kentucky. DeVaux, then an assistant for trainer Chad Brown who conditioned Lady Eli, was with the filly every step on her long journey back. When Dr. Robert Agne died, DeVaux said she wanted to one day name a horse for him.

And here we are.

The horse came to her barn in April after he was scratched out of an auction. He was then bought privately by a group that included some of Lady Eli's owners. One is Sol Kumin, whose Sheep Pond Partners owned Lady Eli.

The widow of Dr. Robert Agne, Carrie, made the trip to Saratoga from Asheville, North Carolina, to see this special horse debut It was emotional. There were hugs between Carrie and DeVaux in the box seats when jockey Jose Ortiz got Dr. Agne home. There were tears from Carrie in the winner's circle. There may also have been some from DeVaux, but they would be hidden behind a pair of sunglasses.

“Oh, my God,” Carrie Agne said, when asked what was going through her mind when Dr. Agne struck the front inside the eighth pole, “he might pull this off!”

Carrie Agne, widow of Dr. Robert Agne, after Dr. Agne's emotional debut win at Saratoga | Sarah Andrew

Then, after a pause and a tear: “Bob had such heart. He loved racing, everything about horses. He gave his all.”

Owned by Kumin's Madaket Stables LLC, Twin Brook Stables and Belladonna Racing LLC, Dr. Agne was foaled in Kentucky. He is the first foal from Lady Eli to run in the United States. The race was originally scheduled to be run on the inner turf at a mile but heavy rain on Thursday night forced it to be moved to the main at seven furlongs.

“I knew he would be fine,” DeVaux said. “I felt like he would be ok, just getting a race under his belt. I was not surprised that he could win. Against dirt horses, it might be a lot different.”

Sent off as the 7-2 third choice, Dr. Agne held off a late charge from 2-1 favorite Epic Desire (Uncle Mo) and Irad Ortiz Jr. and got to the wire first. Dr. Agne ran the seven furlongs in 1:25.97 and paid $9.70, $3.80 and $2.90.

When the colt is next seen, DeVaux said it will be on the grass. Lady Eli, after getting back to the races, was the 2017 Eclipse Award winner for champion Turf Female.

While allowing this victory to settle in, DeVaux said she was more nervous for Carrie Agne, who was making her first visit to Saratoga since 2015.

“For me, we do this, we have a lot of 2-year-olds,” DeVaux said. “I try to manage my expectations with each of them accordingly. I wanted everything to go well for Carrie. This is like her first soiree, and I wanted to make her proud.”

Three Chimneys Homebred New Magic Last To First In Monmouth Debut

Thoroughbred Daily News - Fri, 2025-07-11 17:28

8th-Monmouth, $51,275, Msw, 7-11, 3yo/up, 1m, 1:38.40, ft, 1 length.
NEW MAGIC (c, 3, Curlin–Magic Dance {SW & GSP, $191,083}, by More Than Ready), sluggish from the gate as the 5-2 second choice, quickly found himself far out of it into the first turn as the far more experienced race favorite Bridoza (Khozan) dueled on the front with Atrocious (Ghostzapper) through the quarter in :23.63. Making an early move to catch up with the field through a slowed-down half, the Three Chimneys homebred then had to shift out wide to keep coming and was up into contention by the time the leaders swung for home. In a four-wide calvary charge to the line, New Magic finished up best to deny Bridoza by a length. Magic Dance, herself a half to MGISW and $4.4m FTKNOV broodmare buy Guarana (Ghostzapper), has since produced back to back fillies by Gun Runner in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $31,500. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.
