Biography: 

Since 1994, Edward L. Bowen has served as full-time president of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, traditionally the leading source of private funding for veterinary research specifically to benefit all horses.  Typically the Foundation will be funding 15-18 specific projects at various universities, providing $1,000,000 annually.

Prior to joining the Foundation Bowen was a journalist covering racing for 30 years, primarily with The Blood-Horse, where he served as managing editor and then editor-in-chief. He is the author of 19 books on Thoroughbred racing.

Bowen was born in Welsh, W. Va., grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and attended the University of Florida and University of Kentucky. He was a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army Reserve.  He is a past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America, and is currently a vice president of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame as well as president of the American Academy of Equine Art. Bowen and his wife, Ruthie, live in Versailles, Ky., and are the parents of George Bowen, a college sophomore. Bowen also has two grown daughters, Tracy Bowen and Jennifer Schafhauser, and two granddaughters.
