Ogden Mills (Dinny) Phipps has served as chairman of The Jockey Club since February 10, 1983. It is the longest tenure for a chairman of The Jockey Club. (August Belmont served in that capacity from January 24, 1895, until December 10, 1924.)
Phipps serves as a board member for the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and the wholly owned subsidiaries of The Jockey Club. He is also a member of the Equibase Management Committee.
Before becoming chairman of the board of The Jockey Club, he was the chairman of the board of The New York Racing Association Inc. from 1976 until 1983.
A New York City native, Phipps attended Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass., and Yale University, where he received a B.A. degree in 1963.
He served as a director and chairman of the board of Bessemer Trust between 1976 and 1994 and chairman of Bessemer Securities Corporation 1982-1994.
He is a member of Breeders’ Cup Ltd. and served on the board of directors of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Inc. from its inception until June 2007.
Phipps was a director on the King Ranch board from 1996 until 2004 and still serves as a governor and member of several committees for New York-Presbyterian Hospitals Inc.
In addition to numerous stakes winners campaigned by other members of the Phipps family, Ogden Mills Phipps has owned and raced Successor, the champion juvenile colt of 1966; Rhythm, the champion 2-year-old colt of 1989; Inside Information, the champion older filly or mare of 1995; and Storm Flag Flying, the 2-year-old filly champion of 2002.
He was also the breeder of Smuggler, the 3-year-old filly champion of 2005, who raced for the Phipps Stable.
Other stakes winners include Adjudicating, Awe Inspiring, Boisterous, Dancing Forever, Dispute, Duty Dance, Educated Risk, Intrepid Hero, Majestic Light, Mining, Orb, Persistently, Pleasant Home, Point of Entry, Time for a Change, and Time Tested.
Phipps has called Rhythm’s triumph in the 1990 Travers Stakes, come-from-behind victories by Personal Ensign in the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Distaff and Storm Flag Flying in the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, and Orb’s Kentucky Derby win in 2013 his most memorable moments in Thoroughbred racing.
