Richard Migliore

Biography:

Richard Migliore’s first riding experiences began at age 11 with lessons at Hunting Hollow Farm in Deer Park, New York.  He started a “pony ride” business with friends at the age of 13. This turned into pony racing in which he broke and rode his own entries.  Then Richie watched Bill Shoemaker win the Marlboro Cup on Forego and he knew what his destiny would be.  His first job on the racetrack came under the shed of trainer, Stephen DiMauro. He rode his first race in September, 1980.  Richard earned the Eclipse for Leading Apprentice Jockey in 1981 at age 17.

Migliore scored 4,450 wins with 362 stakes wins and 25 Grade 1 wins including the Breeder’s Cup Sprint on Desert Code in 2008.  He won his 4,000 race on February 4, 2005. In October of 2006, Richard made a career move to ride the California circuit starting at Hollywood Park.  He returned to the east coast in the summer of 2008 and rode that Saratoga meet and stayed in New York.

Of many notable horses ridden, some include Hidden Lake, Funny Cide, Artie Schiller, Fourstardave, Albert The Great and Friends Lake.  His riding career spanned from 1980 to 2010 with 3 setbacks due to serious injuries in that time frame.  He announced his retirement in May of 2010.

Awards include the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, Mike Venezia Memorial Award, Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey 1981, Eddie Arcaro Award for outstanding jockey in 1981 and 1985 and in 2005 awarded the NYTB Jockey of the Year title for a second time.
