Stuart S. Janney III

Biography: 

Stuart S. Janney III has served as the Chairman of Bessemer Trust Company, Bessemer Trust Company, N.A., Bessemer Group, Inc., Bessemer Trust Company of Florida and Bessemer Securities Corporation since January 1995.

In 1970 he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. and in 1973 he received his J.D. from the University of Maryland.

From 1973-76 he held several positions in the Federal government.  He was a legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Charles Mathias, special assistant to the U.S. Secretary of State and later foreign policy assistant to U.S. Senator Howard Baker.  In 1977 he joined Niles, Barton & Wilmer, a Baltimore law firm, where he was a partner.

From 1986-94 he was a Managing Director of Alex Brown & Sons in charge of Asset Management.  He was a Director of Brown Advisory and Trust Company and Alex Brown Holdings. His responsibilities included all investment advisory and investment partnerships.

He currently serves as Vice Chairman of The Jockey Club and Chairman of The Jockey Club’s Thoroughbred Safety Committee.  He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and Chairman of Blood-Horse Publications. He also serves on the Boards of the New York Racing Association, the Keeneland Association, and King Ranch, Inc.

Janney has campaigned, in his name or in partnership with Phipps Stable, numerous graded stakes winners through the years, including 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb, Air Support, Carriage Trail, Coronado’s Quest, Data Link, Hit it Rich, Hymn Book, Hunting and Criminologist, among others.

Mr. Janney is a trustee of The Johns Hopkins University, John Hopkins Medicine and Chairman of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab.

He is married with two children and resides in the Baltimore area.
