SAM-SON FARM has been involved in the Canadian Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding for four decades. The late Ernest L. Samuel began SAM-SON FARM in 1972, when Sam-Son Farm’s first trainer, Art Warner claimed “Takaring” at Fort Erie Racecourse. Takaring would become Sam-Son Farms’ first stakes winner and in 1975, Ernie Samuel purchased his first two yearlings at the Woodbine Sales. These two fillies, NO CLASS and LOUDRANGLE became the foundation of the Sam-Son Farm Broodmare band.
Now celebrating 40 years in the thoroughbred business, Sam-Son Farm prides itself on its incredible team of people who have contributed greatly to the farms’ success.
Throughout the years Sam-Son Farm has earned more than 70 Sovereign Awards which include eight awards for Canada’s Horse of the Year, six awards for Outstanding Broodmare, 10 awards for Outstanding Owner of the Year and seven awards for Outstanding Breeder of the Year. Ernie Samuel was also named Canada’s Man of the Year in 1991.
Sam-Son has won the Queen’s Plate, Canada’s most prestigious and important race and the oldest stakes race in North America, five times and three of those triumphs have come in this decade alone.
Sam-Son Farm and Ernie Samuel have also earned four North American Eclipse Awards, including Man of the Year in 1992.
The Samuel Family is very proud to be a part of all that Ernie and Tammy established and remain committed to continuing in their footsteps to build upon their success.
Today, Sam-Son Farm is comprised of two parts, the broodmare division, located on 200 acres in Milton, Ontario, Canada, managed by Dave Whitford, and the 160-acre training centre located in Ocala, Florida in the US, managed by Tom Zwiesler.
Sam-Son Farm’s head office is located at the farm in Milton with Tammy’s husband, Rick Balaz, overseeing the business as the operation’s President and General Manager.
