Trainer Bio

Yvon Belsoeur, a multiple graded stakes-winning trainer was born in Redon in France, a son of well-known European horseman George Belsoeur who bred Quadrige du Marais toward the Grand Steeple-Chase in Lyon, Deauville and a second in Merano.

He studied at IUT of Saint-Nazaire earning a degree in Marketing.  By 1982, Yvon accepted an apprenticeship under legendary trainer, Maurice Zilber in France.  Zilber who conditioned millionaire and Hall of Fame race mare, DAHLIA.

Yvon Belsoeur philosophy, “The basics learned during my youth are still the patterns of my training today.”

A student and supporter of the Federico Tesio Theory by 1984, he worked as a rider for Paolo Miliani in Milano (Italy).  In 1999, Yvon immigrated into the US and Canada to stay.  He met Christophe Clement at Payson Park and served as rider and foreman.  Returning to Canada, he spent time exercising horses for Michael Doyle and Hall of Fame / multiple Sovereign Award winner, Roger Attfield.  Belsoeur then invested 2 years learning from Taylor Made Farm back in the USA plus time under the shed as foreman and rider for trainer, John Ward.

Yvon began his own stable in 2006 training for Canadian Bruno Schickedanz and Hayman Fung. He won his first for Mr. Fung in 2006.  Yvon’s first graded win came with Schickedanz-owned YUMMY WITH BUTTER on Haskell Day in 2011.
