Trainer Bio

Born: April 23, 1956, in London, Ontario ... Family: sons Bradley and Robert ... Got started driving and training harness horses in Canada. He won more than 1,500 races as a driver and earned over $10 million in purses before losing all his horses in a barn fire at Mohawk Downs in 1991. "I had a lot of spare time on my hands," he said, "so I started hanging around the Thoroughbred track a little bit. I was introduced to a fellow named Lou Donato, and we had lunch together. A couple of weeks later, he called me and said he wanted to claim some Thoroughbreds and asked me if I was interested in training for him. At the time I didn't know anything about Thoroughbreds except for watching the Kentucky Derby on television. I told him I was interested, but I had no idea which horses ran long and which ones ran short or which ones ran on turf or dirt. It was all new to me. I called (trainer) Rita Schnitzler and made a proposal. We could start a partnership and she could be the trainer of record, and I'd help her with the training. We claimed our first horse, Hail Little Star, in 1993." ... Donato then sold half-interest in the horse to Gino Molinaro, and the two formed a partnership. By the end December, they had claimed 15 horses. "I was driving harness horses on occasion, but the Thoroughbreds took over all my time and energy," McKnight said, "so I gradually got out of harness racing altogether. When I went to Gulfstream in December of 1998 with 10 or 12 horses, Rita and I dissolved our partnership. I won my first race on my own with You're Too Much at Gulfstream." ... McKnight and Schnitzler had trained Brite Adam to win over $400,000. McKnight has stopped on him for the season. In 1997, they sent out Dawson's Legacy to finish a surprising second to Favorite Trick in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at odds of 78-1. "That was just tremendous," he said. "It was such an emotional experience. We had handicapped the race prior to going down there and thought we had a legitimate chance to be third or fourth, but that was a real bonus.
