Trainer Bio

Wife, Laurie and three children: Luke, Kyle, and Kelsey

A former assistant to Calder Race Course Hall of Fame trainer Stanley Hough, Plesa, 64, went out on his own in 1986 and has won more than 2,000 career races over 27 years, establishing himself as one of Florida’s top conditioners.

Plesa, a native of Seattle, has had one previous starter in the Preakness, Hey Byrn, who finished seventh behind Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown in 2008, two years after joining Hough, his mentor, in Calder’s Hall of Fame.

Based at Gulfstream Park year-round and Monmouth Park in the summer months, Plesa was born into a racing family. His father, Eddie Sr., was a leading jockey in Cleveland and Detroit before turning to training in the 1960s, moving to Florida permanently when Calder opened in 1971 to become private trainer for Fred Hooper.

Working for his father as well as Hough and a short time at Harbor View Farm in Ocala, Fla., Plesa also spent a year in the racing office at Hialeah Park before embarking on his own training career.

He picked up career win No. 2,000 with Salt Water Cowboy at Gulfstream Park on April 6, 2012, and has saddled such stakes winners as Three Ring, Hey Byrn, Speak Logistics, Brave Dave, Say a Novena, Successful Song, Successful Mission, J J’sdream and Grade 3 winner, Itsmyluckyday who was second in the Florida Derby and the Preakness in 2013. Wife Laurie is co-owner of Itsmyluckyday along with the partnership of Trilogy Stables. The same partnership owns a new star on the rise for the stable is two-year-old Yes I’m Lucky who is 3-for-3 and recently won the Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park.
