Sheriff Bianco upsets snowy Say Florida Sandy

New York Thoroughbred Breeders - Sat, 2025-02-15 15:12

Sheriff Bianco rolls to his first stakes victory at 14-1 in Saturday’s Say Florida Sandy at Aqueduct. Coglianese Photo.

Sheriff Bianco returned on seven days’ rest and ended a 21-race losing skid with a victory through light snowflakes in Saturday’s $125,000 Say Florida Sandy Stakes at Aqueduct.

The 7-year-old Speightster gelding came away with his first stakes victory in the 7-furlong Say Florida Sandy, upsetting his five rivals at 14-1 under Ruben Silvera. Owned by A Bianco Holding Limited and trained by Linda Rice, Sheriff Bianco finished third last Saturday in an open-company 7-furlong allowance-optional at Aqueduct.

“He loves 7 furlongs,” said of Sheriff Bianco, who improved to 1-2-1 in six starts at the distance. “It is a New York-bred, 7-furlong [stakes] and frankly, I’ve had the horse quite a while, and here and there it has looked like he’s tailed off at times.

“We’ve given him a few breaks and I ran him for a claiming price last time out. I was pretty happy with that performance, I thought it was an uptick in his performances, and because of that I said, ‘let’s give him a shot in the New York-bred stakes because seven-eighths is probably his sweet spot.’ ”

Sent off as the second longest shot on the board at 14-1, Sheriff Bianco raced fourth early as Mama’s Gold set the pace ahead of Shipsational and Doc Sullivan through the opening quarter-mile in :23.64.

Mama’s Gold continued to lead around the far turn with Shipsational ramping up the pressure approaching the half-mile split in :46.90. Mama’s Gold still led into the lane before Shipsational took over outside the eighth pole, past 6 furlongs in 1:11.80 under Eric Cancel.

Silvera kept Sheriff Bianco in the clear through the lane and the gelding rolled past Shipsational at the sixteenth pole. He widened his advantage from there, winning by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:24.94.

“I tried to follow the instructions and [Rice] told me, ‘stay behind the speed, comfortable,’ ” Silvera said. “I had a perfect trip and I come behind the speed waiting for the stretch. I tried switching the lead two times, but he never switched. I tried hard in the end and he won.”

Shipsational held second, three-quarters of a length in front of Doc Sullivan. Locke and Key, Mama’s Gold and Whittington Park completed the field.

Sheriff Bianco earned $68,750 for his first stakes victory and improved to 7-for-41 in his career with 23 placings and earnings of $811,863. Seven of those placings came in stakes, including a third three starts back in the Alex M. Robb and a runner-up effort in the 2023 Empire Classic Stakes on Empire Showcase Day.

Rice said Sheriff Bianco could return in the $125,000 Haynesfield for older New York-breds April 6 at Aqueduct.

“He’s good at one turn, whether it be 6 [furlongs] to a mile, it is really where he wants to be,” she said. “He’s even run well at a mile and an eighth at times. The seven-eighths is probably his best spot, but I would assume we will go to the Haynesfield next.”

Bred by SF Bloodstock LLC, Sheriff Bianco is the fourth foal out of the Perfect Soul mare Summer Rules. A half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Peace Rules, Summer Rules is also the dam of stakes winner Never Gone South, a four-time winner an earner of $244,135; and Sister’s Duty, an earner of $79,213.

Summer Rules is also the dam of Nelson Gate, an unraced 3-year-old gelding by Kitten’s Joy who sold for $30,000 to Christophe Clement, agent, at the 2023 Keeneland September yearling sale. Nelson Gate has turned in three breezes this winter at Payson Park Training Center, including a 3-furlong drill in :38.60 February 10.

SF Bloodstock also bred a colt by Quality Road out of Summer Rules that sold as a weanling for $375,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall mixed sale. Summer Rules returned to Quality Road for the 2024 season.

Complexity Filly Takes Battle of the ‘Velvets’ at the Fair Grounds

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2025-02-15 14:53

4th-Fair Grounds, $55,000, Msw, 2-15, 3yo, f, 6f, 1:09.86, ft, 3/4 length.
VELVET VORTEX (f, 3, Complexity–Sweet Pistol, by Smart Strike) was bet down from a morning line of 9-2 to jump as the 13-5 favorite while making her career debut at the Fair Grounds Saturday afternoon and got the better of a final-furlong tussle with second-time starter Velvet Devil (Kantharos) to graduate in strong fashion. Drawn three, the $375,000 Keeneland September purchase bounced beautifully, but was just outfooted to the front by the rail-drawn Velvet Devil, second after leading into the final furlong of her lone start to date over course and distance Jan. 20. Settled just off the pacesetter's flank through sharp fractions of :21.65 for the quarter and :45.32 for the half-mile, the less-experienced Velvet runner chased outside Velvet Devil into the final furlong, grabbed her stubborn rival about a sixteenth of a mile from the finish and edged clear. It was a chasm of 8 1/2 lengths back to the well-meant Atarah (Bolt d'Oro) in third. The winner is a half-sister to 'TDN Rising Star' Faiza (Girvin), the 2022 GI Starlet Stakes winner before adding the GIII Santa Ysabel Stakes and GII Santa Anita Oaks in 2023 en route amassing earnings of $672,000. Herself a $325,000 KEESEP yearling, Sweet Pistol–whose MGSW/GISP dam Pomeroys Pistol (Pomeroy) also produced MGSW sire Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile)–was purchased by the late Brereton C. Jones for $33,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale. Owing to Faiza's exploits, Sweet Pistol's now 7-year-old daughter Kirtan (Cairo Prince) fetched $235,000 in foal to Girvin at KEENOV in 2023, while Faiza herself was hammered down to Godolphin for $4 million at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Sweet Pistol is also the dam of Velvet Vortex's 2-year-old full-brother Cocked Pistol, a $550,000 KEESEP purchase by Mike McCarty at KEESEP last fall, and a colt foal by Not This Time. Sales history: $375,000 Ylg '23 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $33,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart and VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.

Mage And Dornoch’s Half-Brother Breaks Maiden At Santa Anita

Thoroughbred Daily News - Fri, 2025-02-14 18:55

6th-Santa Anita, $60,500, Msw, 2-14, 3yo, 1m, 1:37.84, ft, 4 3/4 lengths.
BAEZA (c, 3, McKinzie–Puca {SW & GSP, $299,406}, by Big Brown) debuted over the grass at Del Mar Dec. 1 and finished a well-beaten ninth. Switching to the main track at Santa Anita Jan. 4, the pricey Keeneland September buy was the runner-up behind 'TDN Rising Star' Rodriguez (Authentic). Backed at the windows as the 2-1 second choice here, the bay came running out of the blocks to shadow a longshot into the first turn. The 3-year-old waited patiently for his cue and when the pacesetter began to lose steam around the far turn he took over the top spot. In control down the lane, Baeza sailed home to get his picture taken by 4 3/4 lengths over Mellencamp (Constitution).

“We hope so,” trainer John Shirreffs said about Baeza joining the Derby trail. “It's that time of year where you try those things. We'll see how he comes out. I'll talk with [owner Lee Searing] and we'll make a decision.”

The winner is a half-brother to Mage (Good Magic), GISW, $2,507,450, Dornoch (Good Magic), MGISW, $2,427,275, and Gunning (Gun Runner), MSP, $278,835. John Stewart purchased Puca for $2.9 million during the 2023 Keeneland November Sale while a colt by Good Magic was in-utero. The well-regarded dam was bred back to that same sire for this season. Baeza's stakes placed second dam is responsible for GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes hero and recently relocated sire Finnegans Wake (Powerscourt {GB}). Sales History: $1,200,000 Ylg '23 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 3-1-1-0, $48,500. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.

Santa Anita Donation Drive For Fire Relief Set For Feb. 23

Thoroughbred Daily News - Fri, 2025-02-14 16:50

Angelenos In Action in partnership with Santa Anita Park are staging a donation drive to aid in fire relief efforts on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the racetrack. Those who choose to donate will be treated to a complimentary day at the races with free admission, free parking and a free racing program.

Donations will be accepted between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the Santa Anita parking lot. Access can be gained via Gate 5 off Huntington Drive or Gate 8 off Baldwin Avenue. Non-perishable food, water, paper products, toiletries and diapers will be accepted.

During that day's live racing program, Santa Anita will be honoring first responders with a free lunch, track admission, open seating in the box seats and VIP tours.

Following last month's wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles County, including the nearby Eaton Fire that affected many in the Santa Anita community, Santa Anita has been at the forefront of relief efforts. A donation center established at Santa Anita in the aftermath of the fires drew more than 100,000 people to pick up or drop-off needed supplies. Portions of Santa Anita's parking lots continue to serve as a base camp for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) and a staging ground for Southern California Edison utility company.

Due to its ongoing relief efforts, Santa Anita was recently recognized as one of nine “Eaton Fire Community Heroes” by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

First Foal for Country Grammer is a Colt

Thoroughbred Daily News - Fri, 2025-02-14 13:12

Multiple Group/Grade I-winner Country Grammer (Tonalist) was represented by his first reported foal, a colt born in early February, at River Valley Stock Farm in New York, WinStar Farm announced via press release.

Out of Bernarda (Bernardini), an unplaced daughter of Listed winner and Grade I-placed Nakano (First Samurai), the colt was bred by Scott and Debbie Pierce, who also bred Country Grammer. The dam's most recent to the races is a placed 2-year-old named Low Key (Bolt d'Oro). Bernarda is the distant female family of MGSW Carson City (My. Prospector) and GSW & GISP General Meeting (Seattle Slew).

“We are very impressed with our Country Grammer colt,” said Dr. Scott Pierce. “He is quite attractive, correct, and has a great shoulder and hip. He is very athletic like his sire. We couldn't be any happier with our first Country Grammer foal.”

The son of Tonalist is the third-leading North American-based earner of all time having won or placed in 10 graded/group races. He was a runner-up in the 2022 and 2023 editions of the G1 Saudi Cup in addition to claiming the 2022 running of the G1 Dubai World Cup. His career total amassed to $14,921,320 with only the late Arrogate, and Gun Runner having earned more in North America.

Country Grammer stands at WinStar Farm for $5,000 S&N in 2025.
