Rhetorical punches Breeders’ Cup ticket in Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland

New York Thoroughbred Breeders - Sat, 2025-10-04 19:12

Rhetorical joins the ranks of New York-bred Grade 1 winners with victory in Saturday’s Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland. Keeneland Photo.

Rhetorical continued his development and locked down a spot in next month’s Breeders’ Cup with a victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland Race Course.

Gary Barber, Cheyenne Stable and Wachtel Stable’s 4-year-old Not This Time gelding won the $1,038,750 Turf Mile by three-quarters of a length over Program Trading. Irad Ortiz Jr. rode the winner for trainer Will Walden, who saddled his first Grade 1 winner just shy of a year removed from winning his first graded stakes at Keeneland in the Grade 2 Castle & Key Bourbon Stakes.

Rhetorical punched a ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Mile November 1 at Del Mar with Saturday’s victory through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. He also improved to 5-for-6 and joined Frizette Stakes winner Iron Orchard as new Grade 1 winners from the New York-bred ranks.

“I’m just happy for the team,” Walden said. “This is why we do it, get up and do it seven days a week, for moments like this. Super happy for the horse and the ownership: Adam Wachtel, Gary Barber, Everett Dobson. There were some doubts about whether the horse could jump up. We didn’t know. But he’d been training awfully good and giving us all the signs that we wanted to see going forward.

“Irad came into the office this morning and we talked about the race. He rode it to perfection. He’s such a clutch rider and makes the right decisions in those split-second decisions. Just happy for everybody involved.”

Rhetorical’s victory also marked the second time in the last five years that three New York-breds won a Grade 1 stakes in the same year. The trio of Rhetorical, Iron Orchard and Spirit of St Louis join the 2020 trio of Varda, Simply Ravishing and Tiz the Law.

Bred by Mallory and Karen Mort and foaled at Gallagher’s Stud in Ghent, Rhetorical is one of three winners out of the Distorted Humor mare Sheet Humor. She’s also the dam of the multiple graded stakes-placed mare Sterling Silver, a five-time stakes winner, nine-time winner and $1,143,051-earner.

Sent off as the 9-1 third choice behind European shipper and 7-5 favorite Diego Velazquez and 4-1 second pick Program Trading, Rhetorical set up shop early in fourth behind Quatrocento, Howard Wolowitz and Epic Ride. Quatrocento led through opening splits of :22.40 and :46.07 over the firm turf.

Ortiz angled Rhetorical off the inside heading to the far turn and kept the gelding wide around the far turn. They inched up to third with Quatrocento still in front past 6 furlongs in 1:10.08.

Rhetorical cut into Quatrocento’s advantage in the lane before taking over just inside the eighth pole. He opened up from there and held off the late run of Program Trading, who edged Brilliant Berti by a neck. Rhetorical won in 1:33.61.

“There was speed in the race so we were looking to have a pocket trip and it ended up being beautiful, perfect,” Ortiz said. “Going into the first turn, we already pulled that off. He switched off, and after that I was a good passenger, I guess, because I tipped him out at the quarter pole and he responded. He was ready to run. Will did a great job, so I’m happy for him to get his first Grade 1.”

Unraced at 2, Rhetorical won his debut in late July 2024 at Saratoga before finishing a close third in a state-bred allowance there a month later. After nine months off, Rhetorical returned to the races with a dominating win over New York-breds in an allowance race in mid-May at Aqueduct.

Wachtel, Dobson’s Cheyenne Stable and Barber privately purchased the gelding after that win. He’s rewarded that move with three straight victories – an open allowance-optional and the West Point Stakes at Saratoga, and the Coolmore Turf Mile.

Rhetorical picked up $573,500 for the victory, boosting his bankroll to $824,700.

No ‘Rhetorical’ Questions: Another Not This Time Winner of the Coolmore Mile

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2025-10-04 18:24

Gary Barber, Cheyenne Stable and Wachtel Stable's Rhetorical (Not This Time) provided his all-conquering sire with his second winner of Keeneland's GI Coolmore Turf Mile in the space of three years, striking from close range to earn an all-expenses-paid trip to Del Mar for the GI Breeders' Cup Mile exactly four weeks down the road. Not This Time's Eclipse Award-winning son Up to the Mark won this event in 2023 ahead of a very good runner-up effort in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf.

Only once-beaten in five career starts coming into this first go at graded stakes company and exiting a popular victory in the state-bred restricted West Point Stakes at Saratoga, the $320,000 Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearling Sale grad–carrying the Wachtel black and gold this time–was dispatched at odds of 19-2 and bounced nicely from gate nine, and when GIII Mint Millions winner Epic Ride (Blame) went up to sit off the cracking early pace set by Quatrocento (War Front) and the stretching-out Howard Wolowitz (Munnings), Irad Ortiz, Jr. was able to slide Rhetorical down onto the fence to save ground while those ahead of him did the heavy lifting.

Enjoying the run of the race for the remainder of the contest, Rhetorical traveled one out and one back with cover on the back of the distance-challenged Howard Wolowitz down the back and around the second turn and was steered three wide and into the clear to lay down his challenge in upper stretch. Rhetorical quickly went to a weakening Quatrocento inside the final furlong and proved an ultimately comfortable winner, as Program Trading (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and Brilliant Berti (Noble Mission {GB}) made belated inroads.

Rhetorical became the second open Grade I winner on the afternoon bred in New York, joining Frizette Stakes heroine Iron Goddess.

The Coolmore Mile was a first winner at the Grade I level for young trainer Will Walden.

“I'm just happy for the team. This is why we do it, get up and do it seven days a week, for moments like this,” Walden said. “Super happy for the horse and the ownership: Adam Wachtel (of Wachtel Stable), Gary Barber, Everett Dobson (of Cheyenne Stable). There were some doubts about whether the horse could jump up. We didn't know. But he'd been training awfully good and giving us all the signs that we wanted to see going forward.

“Irad came into the office this morning and we talked about the race. He rode it to perfection. He's such a clutch rider and makes the right decisions in those split-second decisions. Just happy for everybody involved.”

With just the five previous starts under his belt, each as the betting favorite, Rhetorical was easily the least-experienced member of the Coolmore Mile field. A maiden winner in a pair of starts last year at three, he returned from an August layoff to thump first-level NY-bred allowance company at Aqueduct May 18 and easily defeated open second-level allowance foes at Saratoga ahead of a 2 1/4-length success in the West Point Stakes. Spirit of St Louis (Medaglia d'Oro), runner-up in the West Point in 2023 and 2024, won this year's GI Pegasus World Cup Turf and GI Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic Stakes.

Pedigree Notes:

Rhetorical is the 29th group/graded winner and ninth Grade I winner (56 SWs overall) for his remarkable young sire and at the other end of the spectrum, the late Distorted Humor was being represented by his 72nd group/graded winner as a broodmare sire, his 26th at the highest level.

The Robert Masterson-bred Sheet Humor, also the dam of the five-time stakes winner and five-times graded-placed Sterling Silver, was sold to Korean interests in foal to Central Banker for $3,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Fall Mixed Sale in 2021. The mare produced a colt in March 2022, but according to the Korean Studbook, was barren to Race Day for 2023 and slipped her Hansen foal of 2024.

Silawi Steals The Canadian International On The Front End

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2025-10-04 18:00

Silawi (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) continued a big day internationally for Wathnan Racing Saturday, giving the ownership group a second top-level win on the day in the GI Pattison Canadian International Stakes at Woodbine.

Making his North American debut, the Irish-bred gelded son of Dubawi has racked up plenty of air miles through the years, though perhaps not as many as race favorite Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Silawi spent much of his formative years in France, breaking his maiden in his fifth start at Saint-Cloud in April 2023. Second in a the G3 Prix du Lys as a 3-year-old, he then shipped to Qatar where he contested both the Derby Trial and the G1 Qatar Derby late that same year before hopping a plane once more to both the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia for runs in the G1 Jebel Hatta and the Saudi International Handicap in early 2024. On the road three more times in the year since (back to France, to Qatar and then to England), Siwali finally got back in the winner's enclosure last time out taking the G3 Weatherbys Global Stallions App Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor going 1 1/4 miles Aug. 23.

He joined stablemate Haunted Dream (Ire) (Oasis Dream {Ire}) in the gate Saturday for Hamad Al-Jehani but was the less favored of the pair, going off at 10-1. Racing with the addition of Lasix for the first time Saturday, Silawi saw one path to victory and it was straight to the lead. Sharp from his outer draw, the longshot had only minor only pressure from both Nations Pride and My Boy Prince (Cairo Prince) who sat off his tail with one lap remaining past the half in :47.30. Still unhurried and on his own on his second time into the backstretch, Silawi continued to sneak away and had a clear, several-length margin back to Nations Pride who was left as the only pursuer into the far turn as the mile went in 1:37.53.

From there, it became clear that Billy Loughnane, who inherited the ride aboard the race favorite from the injured William Buick, was already working and doing little to cut into the gap with a quarter to run. American runner Tawny Port (Pioneerof the Nile) found his best stride inside the furlong pole and came with a challenge up the rail but, while the final result wound up tight, Silawi never let him by to upset the field and earn his first Grade I win. Nations Pride hung on for third. The final time of 2:27.52 was a new course record at Woodbine.

“It is a lucky day for me,” said winning jockey Faleh Bughenaim who also picked up the catch ride Saturday. “Daniel [Tudhope] told me he cannot get the flight and Hamad (trainer, Al-Jehani), gave me a chance to ride. He's one of the best horses we have in our yard in Newmarket, and Hamad and his assistant believe Silawi can do great races. He gave me a nice Group 1 [win] in Canada, and I was happy it worked out.”

Al-Jehani added: “Silawi is a frontrunner, and with this racecourse, I think with a tighter track, I think you got a huge advantage if you are in front, and we know that the Godolphin horse (Nations Pride), he's a nice horse, and if we decide to make a different plan, it will be hard to beat him. So, we take that advantage to go forward, and we make the pace from the beginning and follow the plan very well, and I think he deserves to be here in the winning enclosure today. It's not a surprise because I feel from the beginning when we start to do the entry. I believed if Silawi came to Woodbine racecourse, he can show greater performance. So, the trainer is not always right, but today I'm right, so it's a great result for the team. That result, it's not coming from Hamad Al-Jehani alone–it's coming from all the team.”

Wathnan Racing, who purchased Silawi as a 3-year-old at the Arqana Arc Sale in 2023 for €380,000, also saw top-level success Saturday when their Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) took the G1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket earlier in the day. And if that weren't enough, another Wathnan runner First Look (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) took down the G2 Qatar Prix Dollar at ParisLongchamp.

Pedigree Note:
Silawi is the 51st winner at the Grade/Group I level for Darley stallion sensation Dubawi who also counts champions like Rebel's Romance amongst his top 2025 runners. As you would expect from a horse bred by Wertheimer et Frere, the gelding is impeccibly well bred out of a homebred mare who conquered both the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac-Criterium des Pouliches and the G1 Pour Moi Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary before retiring to her broodmare career where she has produced four winners from five to race. Silawi's best siblings include his 3-year-old full-brother Silius (Ire) who is a stakes winner in France and placed in multiple graded stakes there as well along with half-brother Fasol (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) who is MGSP in France also. The family has been in the Wertheimer et Frere studbook all the way back through Silawi's fifth dam in Vallee Dansante who was born in Kentucky in 1981. Silasol has a 2-year-old unraced Night of Thunder colt, a yearling Kingman colt and a filly by Churchill born this year.

Unbeaten ‘Rising Star’ Ted Noffey Makes a Name for Himself in Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2025-10-04 17:43

Undefeated Ted Noffey (Into Mischief), a runaway winner of the GI Spendthrift Farm Hopeful S. and a 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard,' solidified his status as the horse to beat in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile with an impressive performance in Saturday's 'Win and You're In' GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity S. at Keeneland.

Off as the 4-5 favorite while drawn widest of all in post six in this two-turn debut, the Spendthrift Farm colorbearer found a perfect spot in second beneath the hot-handed John Velazquez through an opening quarter in :23.96 and a half mile in :48.23. The handsome gray hit the front on the far turn, kicked for home in control and kept on powering down the stretch to defeat 3-2 second-choice and fellow 'Rising Star' Blackout Time (Not This Time), a dominating maiden winner second out at Ellis Park, by 2 3/4 lengths. Pacesetter Litmus Test (Nyquist) was third.

An eye-catching debut winner going 6 1/2 furlongs on Whitney day at the Spa Aug. 2, Ted Noffey earned a gaudy 98 Beyer in his Hopeful win.

“Everything in his training indicated to us that he wouldn't have any issue with (two turns),” winning trainer Todd Pletcher said. “It's always great to see them actually do it. It worked out beautifully today. He had a good trip to the first turn, got into a good rhythm and was just kind of waiting on Johnny (Velazquez) to give him the cue. It was what we were hoping for and what we expected but, like I said, you always want to see it.”

You've certainly heard the 'typo' story behind his name now. Ted Noffey is named, tongue in cheek, for Spendthrift Farm's longtime general manager and Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers' Club 2024 Ted Bates Farm Manager of the Year Ned Toffey, who had his named misspelled in a recent interview with a trade publication.

“I'm sure going to enjoy it, because there's plenty of them that go the other way,” Toffey said. “It's a tough game, and when you have a day like this you'd better enjoy it because tomorrow might be a lot worse. It's a lot of fun. We've been really fortunate. We have great ownership behind us that support everything, a wonderful team, and we're just in a great situation and in a position to have this kind of success. Hopefully, it will continue, but it's a great day and we're sure going to enjoy this.”

Toffey continued, “Our impression from talking to Todd (Pletcher) and from what we've seen is that he would handle the stretch-out. He's a nice sized, scopey, leggy horse, built to like two turns. The way he ran in the Hopeful would make you think he'd like two turns, but they still have to do it. We were cautiously optimistic, but you just never know until they do it, and he sure did it today.”

Spendthrift Farm and Pletcher also won the 2-year-old filly equivalent GI Darley Alcibiades S. with 'Rising Star' Tommy Jo (Into Mischief) via disqualification on Friday's program. Spendthrift won four races on Saturday's card.

Pedigree Notes:

One of 27 top-level winners for Spendthrift Farm's six-time reigning champion general sire Into Mischief, Ted Noffey brought $650,000 from Spendthrift Farm as a Keeneland September yearling.

Ted Noffey's dam SW & MGSP Streak of Luck (Old Fashioned) brought $620,000 from Aaron and Marie Jones at the 2021 KEENOV sale. She is also responsible for a yearling filly by Munnings ($425,000 KEESEP yearling purchase by Repole Stable) and an Into Mischief colt of this year. She was bred back to Not This Time.

‘Rising Star’ Intrepido, by Maximus Mischief, Wins ‘WAYI’ American Pharoah

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2025-10-04 17:37

Four of the six 2-year-old runners in Saturday's GI American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita had graded stakes experience, but it was one of the two maiden winners making his stakes debut who came home with the victory and secured a 'Win and You're In' spot for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar in four weeks time. Intrepido (c, 2, Maximus Mischief–Overly Indulgent, by Pleasantly Perfect), named a 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' in his Aug. 23 Del Mar win, rated and showed fight in between horses before finishing strong to capture his first graded win and punch his ticket to championship day.

When the gates sprang, Intrepido jumped sharply, but jockey Hector Berrios eased him back slightly as $1.15-million Keeneland buy Kristofferson (Nyquist) and GSW & GISP Desert Gate (Omaha Beach)–one on either side of Intrepido–were both intent on the lead. As the two favorites–Desert Gate at 4-5 and Kristofferson at 9-5–vied for supremacy through :22.83 and :46.76 fractions, it was Desert Gate, a 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard', holding the edge at every call while Intrepido was in tight between horses behind them and even forced at one point to take up slightly off heels.

“It was a bit of a complicated race at the start,” said Berrios. “I tried to go to the front, but I saw [Desert Gate] break first, so I settled into second. From the first turn, I had to ease back a little. And again around 600 meters I had to hold.”

On the turn, Desert Gate dismissed Kristofferson as Intrepido went around the latter, tipping several paths wide to avoid him and bumping soundly with GI Del Mar Futurity third Civil Liberty (Independence Hall). While all that was happening in the middle of the track, GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf runner-up Plutarch (Into Mischief) cut the corner to challenge Desert Gate and gradually wore him down in a long battle, finally getting his head in front a sixteenth from home. Plutarch looked to have it won in the last strides, but Intrepido found another gear in the final sixteenth to catch the dueling pair yards from the wire. He flew by late on the outside, getting the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.67.

“When I made my move to the outside he responded,” continued Berrios, “although not very strongly at first. But when I asked him again, he responded and produced an impressive change of pace and flew down the final stretch. He's an amazing horse. I'm very proud of the effort he showed today.”

Intrepido was a $385,000 purchase at the OBS April sale by Michael Pender for Dutch Girl Holdings and Irving Ventures. He was the only member of the field to have previously won at a mile and one of only two not trained by Bob Baffert.

“He's a nice horse, a really nice horse,” said trainer Jeff Mullins.

Intrepido debuted July 26 at Del Mar with a fourth sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs behind unbeaten $3-million OBS March topper, 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard', and GI Del Mar Futurity winner Brant (Gun Runner), then got his own 'Rising Star' title and first win going a mile over that same surface Aug. 23 after he dueled at the start and pulled clear impressively in the lane. He is not nominated to the Breeders' Cup, but is eligible for nomination for the $2-million Juvenile at $100,000.

Pedigree Notes:

Maximus Mischief is the sire of four graded winners from his three crops to race, including his first-crop runner and MGISW Raging Torrent, whose retirement was announced this summer and who will be a new stallion next season at Lane's End. Maximus Mischief, who stands at Spendthrift alongside his sire, Into Mischief, has 14 black-type winners.

Sierra Fria Farm bred Intrepido in Kentucky out of the placed mare Overly Indulgent, who went through an auction ring once, only to be a $14,000 RNA at the Fasig-Tipton New York yearling sale in 2013. She hails from the same family as 2008 GIII LeComte Stakes winner and GII Arkansas Derby second Z Fortune (Siphon {Brz}) and has now produced one of the 16 stakes winners out of daughters of Pleasantly Perfect. While Overly Indulgent and her dam were bred in New York, some of their immediate tail-female ancestors were bred in Minnesota, South Carolina, and Indiana, not always spots commonly known to produce an eventual Grade I winner among a mare's descendants.

Overly Indulgent has a yearling colt by Caracaro, an Apr. 15-foaled filly by Fulsome, and was covered by Maximus Mischief once again for next term.

#2 INTREPIDO ($19.60) had a strong kick late to get up and win the $300,000 American Pharoah Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita. The son of Maximus Mischief (@spendthriftfarm) earned a spot in the @FanDuel @BreedersCup Juvenile (G1). @HIBerrios was up for @Jmullinsracing. pic.twitter.com/Hi6ZaX19ou

Summer Front’s Simply in Front Derails Brown Train in First Lady

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2025-10-04 17:14

Turf distaffers trained by Chad Brown had taken the seven most recent renewals of the GI First Lady Stakes at Keeneland, and the New York native looked to have a fair chance to extend that streak in the Bluegrass on Saturday afternoon. But it was Colebrook Farm's Simply in Front (Summer Front) split rivals inside the final eighth of a mile and found the line first to cause a 13-1 upset in a bunched finish and snap the Brown domination, however temporarily.

The mount of Ben Curtis, the $115,000 Keeneland September graduate drifted back through the field and secured a foothold at the fence worse than centerfield as longshot Raqiya (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) led through an opening half in :47.07.

Racing with just one rival behind entering the final three-eighths of a mile, Simply In Front–a very good second to Ag Bullet (Twirling Candy) in the GII Kentucky Downs Ladies' Turf Sprint over 6 1/2 panels in her most recent appearance back on Aug. 30–slipstreamed the lesser-preferred of the Brown entry Segesta (Ghostzapper) into the lane, dove down to the inside of that one in upper stretch, hit the front late and held off a resurgent Segesta for the victory. Choisya (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) sat a trip similar to the one that resulted in her mild upset of this track's GI Jenny Wiley Stakes in April and led late before settling for third.

The First Lady marks the first American top-level success for Curtis, who rode with great success over the winter at the Fair Grounds and at the recently completed meeting at Colonial Downs.

“It's unbelievable. I can't put it into words, to be honest with you, and getting it for [trainer] Eddie [Kenneally] as well,” Curtis said. “I first came over for him years ago. He used to tell me I was breezing them wrong, but I think we finally got something right! To do it for him, all the team there, Catherine [Mrs. Kenneally] and the kids, it means the world to me. She's a really nice filly and everything went perfect today.”

Runner-up to She Feels Pretty (Karakontie {Jpn}) in the GI Natalma Stakes at two and winner of the age-restricted Music City Stakes last September, Simply in Front belied odds of 15-1 in the GII Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill May 3, but was only fifth to Dynamic Pricing (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) in an easy-ground renewal of the GI Just A Game Stakes at Saratoga June 6. Narrowly best in the Kentucky Downs Preview Ladies' Turf Mile at Ellis Aug. 3, she was doing her best work in the late stages last time at Kentucky Downs, where she failed to catch the classy Ag Bullet by just three-parts of a length.

Pedigree Notes:

Simply In Front is the first Grade I winner for Summer Front and she is the seventh top-level scorer out of a daughter of Blame, his fourth such winner in 2025. His three previous Grade I winners as a broodmare sire this term include Hope Road (Quality Road, Ballerina Stakes), World Beater (Oscar Performance, Saratoga Derby) and Kilwin (Twirling Candy, Test Stakes).

Under the banner of his Miacomet Bloodstock, William Harrigan purchased the placed Complicated for $110,000 at Keeneland November in 2016 and her enviable produce record has made her progeny increasingly popular from a commercial standpoint. Simply In Front is the mare's second offspring to succeed at the Grade I level in as many years, joining And One More Time, winner of the 2024 Natalma Stakes. A half-sister to the dam of this year's GIII Matron Stakes victress Final Accord (War of Will) from the same sire line as the First Lady winner, Complicated is the dam of the one-raced 2-year-old filly Aporia (War Front), a $300,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling, as well as a yearling colt by Golden Pal already named Roosevelt who fetched $475,000 from Twin Creeks Farm at this year's Keeneland September Sale.

Complicated was barren to Not This Time for 2025 and returned to that stallion this past breeding season.

Venerable 9-Year-Old Khaadem Sports Top Gear Late In Woodford At Keeneland

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2025-10-04 16:59

As a 9-year-old, Khaadem has won his share of some top flight races in England for Mrs. Fitriani Hay over the course of his illustrious career, which has netted the gelding nearly $2.5-million in earnings. On Saturday in the Woodford Stakes, the venerable Thoroughbred once again got his picture taken with a thrilling come-from-behind victory at Keeneland.

Trained by Charlie Hills, Khaadem highlights include during his 6-year-old season scores in the G3 Betfair Palace House Stakes at Newmarket that April and in the G2 King George Qatar Stakes at Goodwood in late July. The pièce de résistance for the turf sprint specialist came when he won consecutive editions of the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes during the Royal Meeting at Ascot in 2023 and 2024. More recently, the dark bay came back to the U.S. at the end of August for the second year in a row to contest the GII Mint Kentucky Turf Sprint at a Kentucky Downs–the result was a third-place finish.

Tabbed as a 3-1 shot here, Khaadem did not do himself any favors at the break when he blew the start, which put him last up the backstretch. As 'TDN Rising Star', presented by Hagyard, Doncho (Mo Town) continued to make the pace through the far turn, Frankie Dettori's mount began to tip to the outside for a run down the center of the course. Firing on all cylinders and looking every bit a pro who has fought many a sprint battle on the grass heading for home, Khaadem's late move won the day and earned him a trip to the new stakes winner's circle at Keeneland. Arthur Hancock III's homebred Script was the runner-up.

“He's [Khaadem] been training here since [finishing third in the Mint Kentucky Turf Sprint-G2 at] Kentucky Downs a month ago, so he is into a nice routine,” said trainer Charlie Hills. “I was a little bit worried about how quiet he was, to be honest with you. He's 9-years-old, he's won some fantastic races in his career and I just think he likes being out here.

“He's just gotten used to the different way of training,” he said. “I think it's just sparked him up. Ed Vaughan–we go back a long way–he and I looked after him the last few weeks and he did a fantastic job. He's got his old spark back, so hopefully we might look at the Breeders' Cup in a few weeks' time.”

Pedigree Notes:

Dark Angel (Ire) (by Acclamation {GB}) needs no introduction internationally as an acclaimed sire. Of course, the stateside graded runners he claims includes the likes of Raging Bull (Fr), Althiqa, Hunt and Heredia.

The dam of 11 foals, six to race and four winners, White Daffodil is responsible for Khadeem's older full-brother Long Out Island (Ire), who placed in three English group races during his career. The winner's dam is also produced a current yearling filly by Supremacy (Ire) and a filly by Chaldean (GB) who is now a weanling. She was not reported as bred for next spring.

Beholder’s Daughter Tamara Back In A Big Way, Romps In The Chillingworth

Thoroughbred Daily News - Sat, 2025-10-04 16:41

She's back!

The beautifully-bred Tamara (Bolt d'Oro) returned to the races Saturday off nearly a year-long layoff and did so with a statement win in the GIII Chillingworth at Santa Anita.

The Spendthrift homebred set hearts aflame as a 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' juvenile, emulating the success of her mother to start her career two-for-for including a 6 3/4-length stroll in the GI Del Mar Debutante. The heavy favorite headed into the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita in 2023, she faltered home in seventh and exited the race with a reported injury.

While Mandella reported after that the injury would not require surgery, Tamara was sidelined for over a year, returning to run second by a nose in an optional claiming race back at Del Mar in Nov. 2024. Another layoff followed as the talented filly had another setback, this one requiring surgery, that sat her out for much of her 4-year-old year.

Back in a big way for Spendthrift Farm who continued to have a strong run of success through the weekend (their Tommy Jo {Into Mischief} captured Friday's GI Darley Alcibiades), Tamara was welcomed back by the betting public too as the 2-5 favorite. Drawn in the middle of this five-horse field, the homebred sat cozy in a stalking second as Bob Baffert runner Silent Law (Tiz the Law) opened up the pace up the backstretch. Never seeming in any hurry even as Silent Law looked to try and steal away around the far turn, Tamara began to move under a motionless Mike Smith and pulled Silent Law back to her in a matter of strides. The top two turned for home as one but it was clear from the eighth pole that Tamara had found another gear and drew off in convincing fashion as Smith hand rode her to a geared-down win.

Silent Law was over 14 lengths clear of Ang N Ash (Audible), a filly who outran her 48-1 odds and picked up a nice pedigree update Saturday when her 2-year-old half-brother Local Knowledge (Yaupon) became a new 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' at Keeneland.

“She was very eager leaving there,” said Smith. “She actually wanted to go head-to-head with (Silent Law) and I had to talk her out of it a little bit. Once she hit her left lead, she hit another gear. I thought, 'Oh my. She's back.' I think I'm blowing more than she is from just trying to pull her up.”

Mandella added: “You really couldn't ask for it to go any better today. Now we have to see how she comes out of this race.”

Pedigree Note:
Tamara's pedigree certainly needs little introduction. She's one of 19 stakes winners for Spendthrift stallion Bolt d'Oro and out of a mare who earned over $6,000,000 on the track and was named an Eclipse winning juvenile, 3-year-old and twice older mare. Besides her racing career, Beholder is out of blue-hen mare Leslie's Lady, making her a half-sister to both GISW and sire Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy) and GISW and leading general sire Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday). Another half-sister in Leslie's Harmony (Curlin) produced a champion in Saudi Arabia with Scotland Yard (Quality Road). As a broodmare for Spendthrift Farm, who purchased her as a yearling in 2011 at Keeneland for just $180,000, Beholder has two winners from four to race including another graded winner in GIII Senorita Stakes winner Teena Ella (War Front). Most recently, she has a yearling filly by Jackie's Warrior, ventured outside of Spendthrift to foal Gun Runner colt this year and returned to her home shed to visit National Treasure for 2026.

Iron Orchard stays unbeaten in Grade 1 Frizette

New York Thoroughbred Breeders - Sat, 2025-10-04 16:12

Iron Orchard secures Grade 1 victory in Saturday’s Frizette at Aqueduct. Coglianese Photo/Susie Raisher.

Iron Orchard joined the ranks of New York-bred Grade 1 winners and put her name in the mix for the Breeders’ Cup if her connections venture that way with a gritty victory in Saturday’s $400,000 Frizette Stakes at Aqueduct.

Owned by Edward Childs’ CSLR Racing Partners and R A Hill Stable, Iron Orchard won the 1-mile Frizette by a nose over 34-1 longshot Rileytole. Joel Rosario rode the 2-1 second choice in the field of 10 2-year-old fillies for trainer Danny Gargan.

Iron Orchard, a daughter of Authentic who cost $500,000 at this year’s OBS April sale, could be a major player in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies October 31 at Del Mar. Gargan didn’t fully commit to the trip just yet.

“Right now, we’ll just be happy and enjoy this,” Gargan said. “She’s done a lot this year. I told the guys before, we’ll see how it goes. There’s next year – she’s a young filly. With the way she ran today, maybe in the future she might be able to go two turns, but I’m just happy with how it went today. I feel blessed. It’s the first horse I’ve trained for the Childs’, so to win a Grade 1 with the first horse that you train for them [is special].

“We’ll have to talk to the owners. I think today, she showed that dimension, but you never know. We’ll see how she comes out of it and go from there. We’ll figure it out.”

The second choice behind 2-1 favorite Carmel Coast, Iron Orchard came into the Frizette off back-to-back victories at Saratoga in the New York-bred ranks. She won the Seeking the Ante Stakes August 22 in her most recent effort.

Gargan said he changed the filly’s training after that victory, “training her a little harder, a little further.”

Iron Orchard raced in fourth early, a few lengths back, and Gargan admitted to some second guessing.

“I’m not going to lie, I thought the first 200 yards into the race, ‘man, I’ve done a bad job training this filly,’ because she relaxed more than I wanted her to,” Gargan said. “I was a little nervous, but you’ve just got to look back and say ‘God, what a good ride.’ He [Rosario] didn’t engage all those horses, he sat. She’s difficult and was grabbing at the bridle with her head kind of cocked, but that’s her in the mornings also. I feel blessed that she pulled that off. You just have to look back and say thank you to everybody – the owners, all my help.”

Iron Orchard didn’t look like much of a threat through a half-mile in :44.84, racing 2 ½ lengths behind Carmel Coast heading into the far turn.

Rosario kept Iron Orchard a few paths off the rail around the far turn and they steadily advanced on the outside. Carmel Coast clung to a narrow lead through 6 furlongs in 1:09.25 with Steer Clear making her run toward the front turning for home. Four fillies stacked up across the track at the eighth pole – Rileytole, Carmel Coast, Steer Clear and Iron Orchard – and Iron Orchard’s momentum carried her to the lead outside the sixteenth pole.

Rileytole hung tough on the rail but Iron Orchard dug in late to win in 1:35.97. Five Bars rallied from last to finished 4 1/4 lengths back in third.

“She’s so fast, and she broke and could have been there,” Gargan said. “I told Joel, ‘Kendrick [Carmouche] is on a fast horse [Carmel Coast], if he thinks the track is fast, he’ll be in play.’ I thought we’d sit second right off of him, and next thing you know, we’re laying fourth. I was like, ‘oh boy, this is a little further back than we thought,’ but it all worked out.

“Her being able to relax with her natural speed gives her another dimension, so she ran bigger than I thought. At the end, she dug in and won the race. She’s a talented filly, we’ve always known that. Today she showed another dimension and it was really special. It was fun to watch.”

Iron Orchard picked up $220,000 and boosted her bankroll to $352,000 in the Frizette.

Bred by Pine Ridge Stable LLC and foaled at Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, Iron Orchard brought the highest price for a New York-bred filly and second most expensive price for a New York-bred at the OBS April sale. She originally went through the ring at the 2023 Keeneland November breeding stock sale, bringing $140,000 as a weanling from Castleton Way. A $97,000 RNA at the 2024 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale, Iron Orchard later sold for $78,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale.

She’s the fourth foal out of the Brethren mare Onebrethatatime, a three-time winner who earned $133,283 and is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Wonderlandbynight and Gilded Miracle, the dam of Grade 1 winner Exaulted.

Onebrethatatime’s third foal, the New York-bred Not This Time 3-year-old filly Backcheck, is 1-for-6 with $45,686 in earnings.

Not This Time’s Imaginationthelady Earns Breeders’ Cup Berth In Jessamine Stakes At Keeneland

Thoroughbred Daily News - Fri, 2025-10-03 17:05

The 35th running of the GII Jessamine Stakes–a 'Win and You're In' race for the GI John Deere Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar–was the graded coming out party for Imaginationthelady (Not This Time–Romanticism, by War Front) who punched her ticket to the seaside oval at the end of the month and the filly also led a Not This Time Trifecta for her sire at Keeneland on Friday.

A $300,000 Keeneland September buy, the juvenile broke her maiden by 1 1/2 lengths at first asking over the Kentucky Downs turf Sept. 4. With most of the public's money deposited in the coffer of 'TDN Rising Star', presented by Hagyard, Time to Dream (Not This Time) who was made the even-money favorite, Imaginationthelady went off as a juicy 10-1 shot here.

The 2-year-old was forward, racing four wide before being taken back a tick by jockey Frankie Dettori, as the field pointed to the first turn. Waiting for the right moment to uncork, the bay made her move around the far turn, which set her up to roll from an outside lane. Hitting the accelerator, the Mark Dobbin filly closed nicely and cleared past the sixteenth marker to take the prizes. Infinite Sky (Not This Time) finished with good energy as the runner-up, while Time to Dream was third to give their sire a clean sweep of the podium.

“I was quietly confident,” said trainer Brendan Walsh. “We liked her before she ran the first time, and she won, and she's been improving since. So it was a question of how much she was improving–typical 2-year-old– but she ran a very nice race [today]. [Jockey] Frankie [Dettori] was able to wait as long as he could, and like he said, he gave her a good education, and I'm sure that will stand her down the line.”

Pedigree Notes:

The versatile Not This Time (by Giant's Causeway) adds another graded scorer to his tally–now sitting at 29. His budding grass roster of higher-level winners includes current sire Up to the Mark and Cogburn, plus Sacred Wish, Troubleshooting, Arzak and Gigante.

Imaginationthelady's dam is responsible for a 3-year-old colt in-training owned by Pin Oak Stud named Juris Doctor (Constitution) and a colt by Liam's Map, who was taken home by Barry Berkelhammer for $325,000 at the recent Keeneland September sale.

Part of an extended female family which includes MGISW Tates Creek (Rahy), MGSW Fulsome (Into Mischief) and European champion 2-year-old filly Special Duty (GB) (Hennessy), Romanticism was entered in Muth's book for next spring.
