Thoroughbred Consignors of North America

Nearly 14,000 Thoroughbreds were bought or sold at auctions throughout North America last year. They are divided by age, racing and/or breeding status. Thoroughbred auction categories include: Yearlings, Two-Year-Olds, Racing Prospects and Mixed Sale (weanlings, broodmares, stallions or racing stock) or Breeding Stock (broodmares, broodmare prospects and stallions). About 30% of the annual crop of yearlings are sold at public auction.

There are over 20 Thoroughbred public auction companies located in North America that consignors may offer horses for sales as representatives for their owners as agents. About 50 auctions are held annually in North America and Canada.

A “sales consignor” provides representation at public auction. Most consignors or sales agents will assist you in choosing the right auction for your horse, prepping a horse for inspections and pre-sales show, then presenting them to the auction ring. Fees, commissions and other services vary from one company to the next. Expenses may include appraisals, physical preparation of the horse prior to the sale, presentation and care at the sales ground, transportation, pedigree research, racing updates, radiographs or other charges.
